Hi I really like your stuff. It'd be cool to see another one where Villain kidnaps an obviously burnt out Hero or otherwise forces them to take a freaking break. Or perhaps Hero does the same for a clearly exhausted Villain.
(may or may not be inspired by my current death by college essay + way too much else)
Hi there friend! I can absolutely write this for you! I adore this scenario so much. Iâm so sorry youâre going through it yourself though, itâs awful irl. I hope this snippet helps, here you go!
Break or Burn-Out
âHeroâŚâ
Hero ignored Villain. They zipped to and fro in their workroom, pulling blue string across different photographs. They had ran out of red string, and they hadnât had time to buy more yet. So blue string it was.
âHero.â
Hero pulled the cap off of a marker with their teeth, circling important newspaper clippings. They went to put the marker down, but wait, where was the cap? Hero searched and searched the mess of papers on their workbench.
âHero!â
Hero jumped, the markerâs cap falling out of their mouth. Ah, there it was. They bent down and slid it on the marker until they heard a click. They picked up a mug of tepid tea and drank all of it in one gulp. They made their way back to the board, but promptly bumped into Villainâs chest.
Villain looked down at them with a mixture of sternness and concern. They took Heroâs wrists in their hand.
âYou need to stop,â they said, âIâve been calling your name for the past five minutes. When was the last time you took a break?â
âNo time for breaks,â Hero said.
They tried to free their wrists from Villainâs grip, but it was as though their own strength had been sapped by tepid tea and blue string.
âSupervillain is going to strike in three days, I have to expose them before that happens.â
Hero swayed a little on their feet. They shook their head, and let ice flow through their hands. Villain yelped, letting go of Heroâs wrists. Hero pushed past them and returned to the board. They read the news article pinned there.
City in shock as Supervillain destroys beloved monument-
City in shock as Supervillain de-
City in shock-
Shock in city as destroys Super-
Hero must have read the same sentence at least five times, but it wasnât sinking in at all. What did sink in, however, was the needle Villain had just jabbed into the back of their shoulder.
Hero took far too long to react to it. They rounded on Villain, the turning motion making them dizzy.
âHey!â Hero said indignantly.
Villain watched them with their arms folded across their chest.
âThat is going to kick in in two minutes,â they said, âI suggest you lay down before that happens.â
âPsh. Two minutes is two minutes,â Hero huffed, âyou canât stop me that easily.â
They turned their attention back to the article.
City in shock as Supervillain destroys beloved monument to Hero. Several attendees were injured, with three in critical condition.
City in shock as Supervillain-
C⌠sh⌠SâŚmon.. attâŚ
Hero shook their head, blinking rapidly in hopes to clear their vision. The words on the paper looked much smaller than before, like everything was zoomed out. The letters were also wiggling around for some reason.
âYou said two minutesâŚâ Hero muttered, feeling their knees buckle.
Villain caught them in one swift movement.
âDid I?â Villain asked, âhm. How curious.â
They repositioned them so that Hero was supported in a bridal carry.
âJustsetmeonthecouch,â Hero slurred in defeat.
âI donât think so,â Villain asked, âI have a better idea.â
Heroâs brow couldnât furrow, and their lips wouldnât part to ask what they meant. Their body relaxed of its own accord. Their eyes fluttered shut, refusing to open back up. They went under to a gentle rocking sensation.
âŚ
Hero blinked the sleep from their eyes, staring up at a chrome ceiling.
âWhereâm I?â they groaned.
Hero already knew the answer, of course, but maybe, just maybe, Villain hadnât done what-
âMy base,â Villain replied.
Never mind. Villain had totally done what Hero was afraid of them doing. Hero glanced at the screen on the wall. It had the date and time in a large font. Heroâs bleary eyes widened.
âHow much stuff did you give me!?â they asked.
Villain pushed themselves off the doorway they had been leaning on. They approached Hero in a few short strides.
âI only gave you enough to knock you out for two hours,â they said, âbut you slept for over thirteen. Your mind and body were completely spent, Hero.â
âNot true,â Hero argued, âmy mind was still sharp as a tack!â
âIs that why you were circling the âfree puppyâ ads instead of information regarding your Supervillain case?â Villain asked.
âSupervillain,â Hero breathed.
They pushed up in an attempt to assume a sitting position. Thick, thermal straps immediately stopped them from doing so. Heroâs gaze bounced from the restraints to Villain and back again.
âDo you mind?â they asked, nodding to the straps.
Villain blinked, glancing down at them.
âOf course,â they said.
Villain reached down, but instead of removing the restraints, they pulled a soft, plush blanket up to Heroâs chin.
âDonât want you catching a cold.â They smiled.
âThat isnât what I meant!â
Villain stood, adjusting their gloves. They checked the time. They started to leave.
âWait! Villain! You have to let me go! Supervillain-â
Villain turned on their heel, eyes burning like an all-consuming wildfire.
âI do not want to hear one more thing about Supervillain,â they said, âI donât want their name to pass your lips. The only thing youâre going to do is rest. Understood?â
âBut the attack-â
âHero, so help me, I will drug you again and stuff you in a straitjacket!â Villain shouted, âyou are exhausted. Youâre burnt out. You did all you could and then some. I donât need you to die trying to prevent one crime.â
They opened their mouth, then closed it. They approached the bed again and tucked a strand of hair behind Heroâs ear.
âIâm taking over your little investigation,â they said, âIâll handle everything. Rest. Thatâs not a suggestion.â
At that, Villain finally left the room, closing the door behind them and locking it with a click. With all other options taken from them, Hero finally relaxed with the assurance that Villain would take care of things. Would take care of them.

CONFIDENTIAL PSYCHOLOGICAL REPORT
PATIENT:Â Richard "Dick" Grayson
THERAPIST:Â Dr. Misaki Eto
SESSION DATE:Â [REDACTED]
FILE STATUS:Â TOP SECRET
SESSION NOTES:
[BEGIN TRANSCRIPT]
Dr. Misaki Eto enters the room with a cup of tea, placing it in front of Richard Grayson, who is sitting with a brightâalbeit tiredâsmile.
Dr. Eto:Â "Alright, Richard. Before we begin, I should let you know that this is a safe space. You can talk about anything, no judgment. Also, I brought tea. Because, frankly, you look like you need it."
Grayson: chuckles "Oh, you have no idea." takes the tea gratefully "And you can call me Dick."
Dr. Eto:Â "Dick, then. So, tell me, what brings you here today? And if you say âBruce made me,â I will absolutely call him and tell him he needs therapy first."
Grayson: laughs, but it sounds a little too practiced "Well⌠technically, it wasnât Bruce. It was a friend. They said I needed to âget my head checked outâ because I donât know how to take a break. Which is ridiculous, by the way. I love breaks. Breaks are great."
Dr. Eto: raises an eyebrow "Uh-huh. And when was your last break?"
Grayson: sips his tea, eyes darting to the ceiling as if the answer is written there "...Does sleep count?"
Dr. Eto:Â "If you have to ask, then no. So, when was it?"
Grayson:Â "Define âbreak.â"
Dr. Eto:Â "Time where you are not working, fighting, solving other peopleâs problems, or emotionally carrying an entire group of people who do not understand the concept of processing their emotions properly."
Grayson: silence blinks sips tea
Dr. Eto:Â "Yeah, thatâs what I thought."
Grayson: sighs, rubbing his face "Okay, okay. So maybe I donât take breaks. But I like helping people. I canât just⌠stop. What if someone needs me?"
Dr. Eto: "Yeah. Damn. Thatâs what I thought." leans forward "Dick, Iâve seen a lot of people like you. People who think that if they just keep moving, they wonât have to deal with all the weight theyâre carrying. But let me ask you this: what happens when you finally stop?"
Grayson:Â "...I donât know."
Dr. Eto: nods knowingly "Thatâs the problem, isnât it? You donât know because you never stop. Youâre a high-functioning burnout case waiting to happen."
Grayson: huffs "Okay, thatâs dramatic."
Dr. Eto:Â "Is it? You flinch when I bring up rest. You deflect with humor. You refuse to admit youâre exhausted because then youâd have to acknowledge that you need help. And if you do that, then what? You think everyone around you is going to fall apart?"
Grayson:Â "...Maybe."
Dr. Eto:Â "Alright, letâs do something fun. On a scale from âIâm doing greatâ to âI cried in my car last week and pretended it was just allergies,â how are you?"
Grayson:Â sips tea aggressively
Dr. Eto: nods "Got it. Not great."
Grayson: laughs softly "Youâre good at this."
Dr. Eto: "Youâre not the first person Iâve met who wears a smile like armor." leans back in chair "But hereâs the thing, Dick. I donât care how many people you help if youâre running yourself into the ground while doing it. If you burn out, if you collapse, who takes care of you?"
Grayson: quietly "...I donât know."
Dr. Eto: softens "Thatâs what we need to fix. You deserve rest, Dick. You deserve to stop without feeling guilty about it."
Grayson: nods slowly "...Thatâs really hard for me."
Dr. Eto:Â "I know. Which is why I already made the decision for you."
Grayson: blinks "...What?"
Dr. Eto:Â "Youâre taking a mandatory two-week break. Effective immediately. No work, no fighting crime, no carrying the emotional baggage of your entire family. Just rest."
Grayson: laughs, but in the way someone does when theyâre hoping youâre joking "You canât be serious."
Dr. Eto: "Dead serious. And to make sure you actually take this break, Iâve already written letters."
Grayson:Â "...Letters?"
Dr. Eto: "Letters. One to your workâbecause I know you have a job outside of whatever it is you actually doâone to your family, and one to whoever signs off on your daily self-sacrificial tendencies."
Grayson: stares "You did not."
Dr. Eto: smugly "Oh, I did. And if I hear that you are not taking this break, I will personally show up at your home and read them all aloud."
Grayson: mutters "This is an abuse of power."
Dr. Eto: "This is therapy."
Grayson: sighs, rubbing his temples "Okay, okay. You win. Two weeks."
Dr. Eto: smiles warmly "Good. Now, finish your tea. Itâs supposed to help with stress."
Grayson:Â "Do you have one that helps with existential crises?"
Dr. Eto: grins "Iâll see what I can do."
[END TRANSCRIPT]
THERAPIST NOTES:
Diagnosis: Overworked. Severely emotionally exhausted. Too good at pretending heâs fine.
Treatment Plan: Mandatory two-week break. Monitor stress levels. Introduce actual rest as a concept. Maybe trick him into hobbies that donât involve saving people.
Letters Sent:
One to his very concerned workplace
One to his probably dysfunctional family
One to the man who may or may not be Batman
Conclusion: Richard Grayson is a chronic overachiever with a hero complex the size of Gotham. He is a genuinely good person who struggles to believe he deserves rest. For now, I will force him into taking a break. If he does not take it, I will personally track down the person who raised him and tell them to intervene.
âŚThough, something tells me that person is also in desperate need of therapy.
FILE STATUS: ACTIVE
NEXT SESSION: TWO WEEKS (AFTER HE ACTUALLY RESTS)
Hero blinked slowly, only just registering the blur of a hand waving in front of their face.
Villain frowned. "What's up with you?" they demanded. "First you don't show up to our fight, then you ignore me and walk right past me when I show up at your door. You didn't even have the decency to leave a coded message!"
Hero stared blankly at their nemesis. "...Sorry?" They really must be out of it if they didn't notice all that.
The villain pressed forward. Hero didn't seem to notice how close they were. "Are you sick? Hurt?"
It took a moment for Hero to register the questions and then another to realize that they were supposed to answer. "Just...tired."
Villain finally leaned out of their space, eyes narrowed. "Well that won't do. I need you at your best if I'm going to beat you!"
Hero nodded absently, already zoning of the conversation.
Hero watched Supervillain warily as they crossed the room to lounge against the desk in front of them. "What do you want from me?"
Supervillain leaned slightly forwards to look Hero up and down. "You're gorgeous, love, so don't take this the wrong way, but you look like you haven't slept in days."
Only days? Hero had barely slept in months. "It's training." they snapped. "And it's none of your business."
"Training?" They thought they detected a slight tremor in Supervillain's voice.
"It's normal." Hero said. "It's fine. I'm not here so you can save me again."
They smiled humourlessly. "Maybe I wouldn't have to save you if you would do it yourself, but no." They sliced through Hero's binds and tugged them to their feet. "I'm kidnapping you. You're mine now. Go get some sleep."
Hero sat on the rooftop, their legs swinging over the edge. It had been what felt like the longest few weeks of Heroâs life, with one problem after the other just hurtling at them. First, there had been the crime family they had to take down, then there was the power struggle between other criminals that had followed, then the mayor had gotten involved, and to top it off, there had been a bank bombing. Hero was beyond exhausted, but it wasnât like they could take a break- they were Hero for goodnessâ sake.
âHero,â Villain called, âyou didnât forget about me, did you?â
Hero sighed, stood up, and turned around. There was Villain, standing on the other side of rooftop in a fighting stance. Hero didnât want to do this now, but they couldnât just let evil run rampant. So, with a groan, Hero dropped into their own fighting stance. Villain grinned and charged. Hero just barely managed to dodge their punch. They weakly threw a punch of their own. Villain easily caught their wrist.
âYouâre off today, Hero,â Villain drawled, âhave you been getting enough sleep?â
Hero wrenched their hand out of Villainâs grip and tackled them to the ground. Villain struggled for a moment but easily overpowered Hero. Villain pinned Hero in place on their back and straddled them.
âWhatâs got you off your game, little Hero?â Villain asked, âyouâre normally much more fun to fight with.â
âBuzz off,â Hero bit out.
Hero tried to wriggle free, but Villain pinned their hands above their head and cupped their face with their free hand.
âSeriously,â Villain said, âIâm worried about you.â
âWhy?â Hero asked, eyes narrowed, âIâve got everything under control.â
âHm,â Villain mused, âwhen was the last time you got eight hours of sleep?â
Hero laughed. That was easy! They always got eight hours of sleep! Well, except for yesterday, and the day before that, and the day before that, and⌠well, maybe their sleep schedule had been off for a little while. Villain noticed Heroâs hesitation and tutted. They got off of Hero and helped them to their feet. Hero swayed at first, but Villain quickly steadied them.
âGo home, Hero,â Villain said, âyou need to rest.â
âWhat!?â Hero asked, âno, I canât! Thereâs still a bunch of other crime families out there trying to take control. I canât stop until theyâre all behind bars!â
âI see,â Villain said, âis there anything I can do to get you to take a break?â
âYou'd have to kidnap me,â Hero joked.
As soon as they had said it, Hero regretted it. They saw a familiar glint in Villainâs eyes.
âAlright,â Villain said with a shrug, âyou asked for it.â
Villain quickly pulled out a syringe from their pocket. Heroâs eyes widened. They backed away from Villain.
âVillain, I was joking,â Hero said.
Villain ignored them and stepped forward; Hero mirrored their movements until their back hit a wall.
âVillain, wait!â
âTilt your head for me,â Villain said, gently moving Heroâs head, exposing their neck.
âVillain, please! I was kidding! I-â
Villain plunged the needle into Heroâs skin and emptied the contents into their system.
âVillain!â Hero yelled in exasperation.
âShh.â Villain put a finger to Heroâs lips and pocketed the empty syringe, âif this is what it takes to get you to rest, so be it.â
âThis isnât funny, this is⌠th-this⌠woahâŚâ
Heroâs vision began to grow blurry, and they lost the strength to hold themselves up. Villain caught them before they could hit the ground and swept them up into a bridal carry.
âThere, that wasnât so hard, was it? Close your eyes.â
âN-no,â Hero said stubbornly.
âDon't be difficult, Hero, just close your eyes. There we go, that's it."
Hero's eyes fluttered shut despite their efforts to keep them open. They were distantly aware of Villain carrying them away to who knew where. Hero drifted off to the sound of Villain's voice.

"Why don't you take better care of yourself?" Villain sighed.
"I do take care of myself!" Hero protested.
"Oh, yes, your growing fever and utter exhaustion are testaments to your exemplary self-care," Villain retorted.
"It's been a busy week, alright?" Hero said, "between school and dealing with you and everything else that's been going on, I just..."
Hero coughed a few times before continuing.
"Look, as soon as the weekend gets here, I'll take a break, okay?" Hero promised.
"Not good enough, little Hero."
Villain closed the distance between them and scooped Hero up into their arms.
"Gah! What are you doing?" Hero cried.
"Getting you to bed for a start," Villain answered, "then some medicine for the fever. Honestly, I shouldn't have to do this for you."
Hero was too exhausted to free themselves from Villain's grip. They let themselves be carried off the rooftop and to Villain's base, where a warm bed and further scolding were both waiting for them.
