If you want to truly understand,

get yourself on a rocket and

head out into space.

Breach the startlingly thin atmosphere

of our tiny planet and look back down

at earth.

The first thing you will notice

is the void of space that forms

the background to our blue dot,

how vast and black and empty it is,

stretching away in every direction,

no up or down or left or right,

just the desolation

and the vacuum

of space.

That is reality.

That is the majority of everything that is.

Most of the universe

is nothing.

The default state of existence

is non-existence.

So the fact that we exist at all is preposterous,

that in the vastness of nothingness

we somehow manage to live

is mind-boggling.

That we still quarrel over arbitrary land borders,

and the abundance of food and water and resources

is senseless.

That we fail to grasp the fragile miracle that is life,

for each human and animal and plant,

is sad.

Just look at earth as a whole,

and you will see it.

Happy Earth Day! The Overview Effect is a cognitive shift in awareness reported by some astronauts while viewing the Earth from space.

From space, the Earth is immediately understood to be a tiny, fragile ball of life, hanging in the void, shielded by a paper-thin atmosphere. The conflicts that divide people seem naive and parochial. National boundaries vanish, encouraging a sense of unity with all of humanity and life on Earth. We are reminded that we are one. The need to create a cooperative planetary society with the united will to protect this planet becomes both obvious and imperative. We really are all in this together.
