What do people ask?
Food company: *Makes GMO food that has no reason to be less safe than “normal” food. Spends 15+ years doing safety research for FDA approval. Gets approval from the EPA as well. Has never made GMO that caused death. * Society: “Oh jeesh? What is this stuff? Genetic engineering? That’s dangerous, that fictional movie Jurassic Park showed us that’s it’s dangerous. I won’t eat stuff I think is dangerous. Are GMOs dangerous? Make GMOs illegal because they’re dangerous.” Scientists: *Does research and comes back.* “Genetically engineered foods are just as safe as conventionally grown food. ” Society: “Safe? I don’t trust evidence, so I still think it’s scary. Does my food have scary stuff in it? If you can’t make it illegal, at least tell me when it’s scary so I can avoid it.” Scientists: “There’s no reason to do that. Are you just trying to make us look bad?” Food company: “You have no idea how expensive that would be.” Society: “Why are food companies trying to stop labeling? What secret about our food are they trying to hide?” *creates conspiracy theory*
Vitamin company: *Is given special treatment and doesn’t even need FDA approval to start selling their product. Lies on their already minimal labels. Products can and have been dangerous.* Society: “Wow! These vitamins sure are amazing and healthy.”
