āDash Baxter?ā
āHere,ā said the boy, bored.Ā Ā
Well.Ā It wasnāt as if role call was anything special.
āRebecca DeLise?āĀ That, at least, was a new name, just transferred in from Spengler High.Ā Lancer looked up to make note of who she was.
āHere.ā
āVery good,ā said Lancer, eyes dropping back to his list.Ā āDanielā¦āĀ He trailed off.Ā They hadnāt taken him off the class list.Ā The district had to wait ten days to drop a student from the roster without paperwork from their new school, but surely there was some kind of regulation or exception for when a student hadā
āHere.ā
Lancerās head snapped up.Ā There hadnāt been another Daniel on the list, so who could possibly have the poor taste to make that kind of joke?
None of the students were looking at Lancer.Ā All of their faces were turned towards a desk at the very back of the classroom, which was occupied by a transparent and fading figure.Ā In less than a second, it was entirely gone.Ā Ā
āDaniel?ā repeated Lancer, weakly.Ā Ā
There was no response.Ā Ā
.
Jack and Maddie Fenton came to the school grim-faced and carrying dozens of devices each.Ā Principal Ishiyama had forbidden anything that even looked like a weapon, even if it was after school hours, but it was probably Jasmine screaming at them on the school steps that actually kept them from bringing anything in.Ā Ā
They waved the machines all around Mr. Lancerās classroom, then walked up and down the hallways.Ā They didnāt call the⦠the apparition Daniel, or Danny, or anything like it.Ā They used words like āghost,ā āimprint,ā and āphantom.āĀ Ā
It put a bad feeling in Lancerās stomach.Ā Ā
Finally, after hours of searching, Jack sighed.Ā āNothing,ā he said.Ā He gave Lancer a wry smile, nothing like the huge ones he used to throw about before⦠Danielās accident.Ā The word death seemed wrong, somehow, after seeingā¦Ā Well, it just seemed wrong.Ā Ā
āProbably just a transient echo,ā continued Jack.Ā āAmity Parkās got higher than usual levels of ambient ectoplasm, makes stuff like that easier.Ā Thatās⦠Thatās why we moved here.Ā You probably wonāt see it again.Ā Mads?ā
āJust another few minutes,ā said Maddie.Ā āWe canāt have something like thatāāĀ She broke off, and even at this angle Lancer could see her biting her lip.Ā Ā
āMr. Lancer probably wants to get home,ā said Jack.Ā Ā
āItās fine,ā said Lancer.Ā It wasnāt, exactly, but he was having a hard enough time, and heād only been Danielās teacher.Ā If this was part of their grieving process, he wouldnāt begrudge it.Ā Ā
āNo, no, we should get back to Jazz,ā said Jack.Ā Ā
āAlright,ā said Maddie.Ā She pulled her goggles away from her eyes, leaving them perched on top of her head as she rubbed her face.Ā Ā
Lancer watched them go before locking up the school, and for a moment he thoughtāĀ But that, at least, must have been a trick of the light.Ā Ā
.
Or, perhaps, not.Ā Ā
āHamlet,ā whispered Lancer under his breath, the fresh worksheet copies in his hand drooping as his grip went slack.Ā He barely saved them from dropping, and when he looked back up, the ghost was gone.
He licked his lips, readjusted his grip on his papers, and decided not to tell the Fentons, this time.Ā Ā
.
Unfortunately, Mr. Lancer wasnāt the only one at the school who had eyes.Ā Ā
.
āWhere did you see the phantom?ā asked Fentonās freak ghost hunting dad, sticking what looked like a tiny satellite dish into Dashās face.Ā Ā
Dash guessed that the ghost hunters might not be freaks after all, though.Ā Theyād been right about ghosts, at least, which wasā¦
It had been weird, hearing that Fenton had died in a freak accident last week, but it had made sense, and it wasnāt like Dash had been buddies with him or anything.Ā He wasnāt taking time off from school, like the freakās paradoxically hot older sister, or freaks two and three.Ā He wasnāt a wimp.Ā Ā
But it had been weird.Ā Dash had never known anyone dead before.Ā Ā
āUh, you know, in the locker room.ā
āWhat was it doing there?ā
āI dunno,ā said Dash, shrugging.Ā He shot a glance at Principal Ishiyama, who looked as uncomfortable as he was.Ā āHe looked like he was trying to open his locker?āĀ Fenton had always had trouble memorizing his combinations.Ā It was one of the reasons it was so funny to āhelpā him.Ā Ā
āThere have been more and more sightings of the phantom,ā said Fentonās mom, scowling.Ā āWe might need to fumigate the whole building.ā
āAbsolutely not,ā said Ishiyama.Ā āIāve already given you a lot of leeway with theāā she hesitated, ā--situation, but we arenāt doing that.ā
āBut the longer we let this go on, the more stable the phantom will be,ā said Fentonās mom.Ā Ā
It was weird, hearing them call Fenton that.Ā Phantom.Ā It was almost like one of Dashās old nicknames for him.Ā Fentina.Ā Fentoenail.Ā Fentertainment Tonight.Ā It was weird, hearing Fentonās own parents say something like that.Ā Ā
āI donāt understand you,ā said Ishiyama, throwing up her hands.Ā āIsnāt that a good thing?Ā Wouldnāt you get to talk to him, then?Ā If it was my sonāā
āThatās not our son!ā
āUh,ā said Dash.Ā āCan I go now?āĀ He didnāt want to think about Ishiyamaās son, Kwan, his best friend, being⦠like that.Ā Ā
āYes, of course, thank you, Dash, for letting us know about the sighting,ā said Ishiyama, barely looking at him.Ā Ā
He left as quickly as he could.Ā Ā
.
āDo you think weāll see him today?ā asked Star.Ā Ā
āHope not,ā said Valerie, poking at her lunch.Ā āUgh, why do I even bother trying with these school lunches?ā
āWhy not?ā asked Star, surprised.Ā Everyone seemed to want to get a glimpse of the Phantom of Casper High.Ā Not many people could say that their school was certifiably haunted.Ā Ā
āBecause itās creepy,ā said Valerie.Ā āThe way heās justā¦Ā There.Ā Whatās he even doing here?Ā I wouldnāt be here if I were dead.ā
Star shrugged.Ā āGhosts are supposed to be stuck where they were when they were alive, arenāt they?ā
āThen shouldnāt he haunt his house?āĀ Valerie shook her head and put down her fork, crossing her arms.Ā āAlso, he was, like, friends with Foley, and Foley was always hanging around outside the locker rooms, asking people to go out with him.Ā Makes my skin crawl.ā
āOh, yeah,ā said Star, scrunching up her nose.Ā āHe was.Ā I forgot about that.ā
.
Jazz stood in the hallway and watched her brother try and fail to pick up a pencil.Ā Ā
It was just as painful as it sounded.Ā Ā
For some reason, Mr. Lancer had put a worksheet on āhisā table, and it, well, it looked like Danny was actually trying to do it.Ā Ā
Jazz wanted to run in and help, but sheā¦Ā What could she do?Ā She couldnāt bring her brother back to life.Ā Couldnāt give him the power to pick up that pencil.Ā Couldnāt even make herself go in, to say something to him, before he faded from sight again.Ā Ā
She swallowed and turned away from the door.Ā Mr. Falluca had sent her on an errand, but now she couldnāt even remember what it was.Ā Ā
Nothing important.Ā Ā
.
āHe answers questions, sometimes,ā said Mr. Falluca, slowly rotating his beer bottle.Ā The teachers rarely went out together after school, and when they did, it wasnāt for drinks, but recent events being what they wereā¦
āHe does?ā asked Lancer, surprised.Ā Ā
āHe does,ā said Mr. Falluca.Ā āTheyāre usually right, too.Ā But that voice.āĀ He tapped his bottle against the table.Ā āDo you think heāll start turning things in?Ā What are we supposed to do about that?ā
There were a few mumbles, but no real answers, as the other teachers either sent significant looks across the table or avoided them.Ā Ā
āWell,ā said Lancer, knocking back his own beer.Ā āHeās still in the gradebook.ā
.
Lancer noticed the glow before anything else, and looked up sharply, half expecting to find a student playing with their cellphone camera.Ā He didnāt.Ā The light was coming from Phantomās hand.Ā Or, above Phantomās hand, from a strange, blue-white ring floating above it.Ā Ā
The ring vanished, and Phantom slowly flexed his fingers, then smiled.Ā Ā
Oh, thought Lancer, and probably all the students in the class, what now?
