Every time I got involved in the arts, it was to escape from whatever problem I had in my life. I never wanted to be home growing up, and if I was, I was in my room practicing whatever instrument I was playing, trying my hand at composing music, or drawing something. A lot of kids my age were finding drugs, or crime, or fighting as an outlet to express themselves. Some found sports, as well. I knew I truly loved the Arts when I would walk home from school in sixth grade (about two miles) carrying a Double Bass to practice for the weekend. Then a Sousaphone and a Tuba later on (I got really tall very quickly, so I was “perfect” for the big instruments). All while walking in the Florida heat. The entire time, I was thinking “I can’t wait to get home and practice!” I knew visual art was special to me when I would get excited about trains passing through and watching them just to see the new graffiti, wondering where it came from and how I could do it. It made me pick up the cans (secretly), and became the inspiration for my aesthetic. I didn’t realize that I have been using the arts this way my entire life - until today. The arts saved me as a child. It has been saving a lot of kids for years. I plan to use it for those who don’t know it can save them as well.
