Hugh was sitting against the bar counter. His chess mates were already paying their tab and heading out for the night. Since the war, Hugh couldnāt quite knock off the night owl habit and so he decided heāll stay for another hour in silence to clear his head (and hydrate after his drink) before heading back to the hotel. The Berlinites around him were engaged in energetic chatter. No one that Hugh knew. He looked over his shoulder and saw that once his fellow Englishmen had left the bar, he was alone.
