A homeless mage with little to no armor uses one hand to cast and the other to wield a melee weapon. What would be some interesting, perhaps underrepresented one-handed weapons that could fill that role?
Hmm, I guess it depends on how much you want to play into the homeless aspect, I think
if you really want to emphasize the not-having-a-lot-of-money aspect, pretty much any dagger would work, though I always gotta rep the Rondel Dagger and its variations
I'm particularly fond of the one with the fully triangular cross section!
Rondel daggers were designed to be very solid blades bc they were typically used to pierce chainmail, the flat pommel is specifically there so you after you drive it in initially you can just hammer on the back of it to drive it in deeper, which is brutal for sure, but it wouldn't be a staple of 14-17th century battlefields as it was if it wasn't effective!
I don't see them often in media, but I don't think I've ever seen the style with the triangular prism-lookin blade used like, anywhere tbh
Another, more traditionally sword-y option would be the Messer, though that one's REALLY popular in HEMA circles I've almost never seen any mention of messers outside of them
they was associated with lower class fighters in the 15th and 16th centuries, in large part due to the handle of the sword being two bits of wood sandwiching the tang and then riveted in sorta kitchen knife-style, instead of the more traditional handle style that fully encompasses the tang. There are longer and shorter versions too, pick your poison, really
Maybe not a traditional weapon by any means but I do also think it'd be neat to have like, the head of a polearm like a billhook or a halberd or something that's just snapped off and used more like a sword
idk I think it'd be neat
Could do like, a Bec de Corbin or something, those are pretty historically common but not so common in like, media to my knowledge
(not like, entirely unheard of, but also not as common as a basic sword, axe, or mace lol)
Though if your character is unarmored it might be good to give them a shield, and if they only have one free hand for a weapon too what better option would there be than to combine shield and weapon together!
I have a buddy of mine who LOVES the Spiked/Bladed Pavise, so there's no way I could mention any weapon without bringing this thing (Or something similar) up lol
Offense and defense in ample supply! Good to block attacks while casting and to throw them when not! 👍 Plus since its mostly wood I can't imagine it'd be terribly pricey, but idk lol, maybe a version of it without the iron middle bit would be cheaper? idk shields came in all sorts of shapes and sizes, plenty with spikes and pointy bits too lol
Admittedly these next few are a little outside my area of historical expertise so I can't say how cheap they'd be, but I do think they're cool as hell so I include them anyway lol
If you want to go for a less european vibe for the character, I'd highly encourage looking into african sword styles, because they have a lot of REALLY cool and interesting blade shapes! (Also that's where the Shotel is from btw! Ethiopia specifically 👍)
This one's called the Ikakalaka, it's one of my personal faves! I just really like the shape, I think it's cool!
This one's called the Takoba, which I also like, but you can definitely see the european influence creeping into this one lol Genuinely though, you almost never see African blade styles anywhere in media, which sucks because they're cool as hell! I'd love to see more of them!
I also would recommend the Indian Urumi, just in general, they're really cool but idk how lesser-known they count as nowadays bc there's one in Elden Ring lol
But there are multi-headed ones too and I don't see them often!
Only just now thought of it as I was getting ready to hit post, but a Seax was a pretty common blade used by vikings, celts, and so forth, they didn't really have any class connotations they were just really common and came in a variety of sizes!
Though also! (ngl I was fully ready to hit post after the urumi and again after the seax but now I'm on a different track lol)
You could maybe try something with throwing weapons too! (Might be cool if your mage like, summons them back to their hand or something? idk I had a d&d character who did that once, would use the Catapult spell to launch their sword at people and then just summon it back to their hand, not sure if it was any more effective than like, any spell at all but it was certainly fun lmao)
though I feel like throwing knives are usually the only thrown weapon I see but there are other options! Such as throwing spikes
Or a hurlbat
Or, circling back to African blade styles being really neat, the all the different variations of Mambele!
I think that's about it for the ideas I can list off the dome, I think any basket-hilted mace, hammer, or axe would also pretty cool and fairly rare as far as media goes?
This sorta thing
Admittedly one-handed flails as we typically know them in media were fairly historically dubious, the only account we have of them iirc thought of them as cavalry weapons but if they existed at all they were hella rare, but one of those with a similar hilt would be cool too I think! (and honestly, like, less of a danger to the wielder's own hand lol)
Anyway sorry for the like, massive block of text and images, but I hope this helped somewhat lol
i get scared when i see two people i follow reblog the same thing. like. who do i reblog from? I'm like a child of divorce trying to decide whether i want to spend christmas with gay orc dad or geronimo stilton fucker mom...
I know this is an insane thing to ask but for the purposes of writing and art can you describe everything you like about Garrosh
i was extremely depressed when you first sent this and im still a lil depressed now but i feel okay enough to talk about he. you see the thing is garrosh is large and some would also say big. he is strong and he has hands and also feet and also legs arms and a face. he got no hair and nasty scary teeth and big ol tusks. he got battle scars and liver spots and probably pox scars too (because i said so). here are some other things:
he used to wear a shirt but then he took it off and never put it back on. even when he had it on it was a pretty small shirt. he is a midriff mans
remember how i said he had hands? its crazy he really does
left shoe metal spikes, right shoe soft. why? power
he loves violence AND his grandma (actually thrall's grandma but we dont have time for all that.)
'enjoy your meal. thats an order'
neck rolls
floppy ears
literate and writes eloquently but usually too angry so he just yell
dogy (malak and nero)
acute sense of smell
disco guy (not canon but we can dream)
orange and triangular like a 3d dorito. the strongest shape
oh im just looking at pics of him now. have you seen him
he is greek. to me. alazon head ass. icarus guy
he
one time he used to have hair but then he got rid of it. but then hearthstone was like dont worry swampgallows we rember (and in mercenaries they later got rid of his ponytail in the second piece because it's anachronistic but i wish theyd put it on his first [wotlk-era] pic instead)
dieselpunk masking king in hots
here are also my top 5 momence from a few years back
thank you this makes me feel a bit better i always love to talk about a guy

have a fuckin BIRTHDAY dude!!! Robots
YAAAAAAAY TYSM MAN
Chainmail vs Lamellar armor?
It really depends on what the fighter prefers! Lamellar is typically more sturdy and will protect you better, with less gaps one could stick a narrow pointy thing in, plus the extra sturdiness would help protect you more from blunt force attacks, but chainmaille being more flexible means it can better cover areas like the armpits and neck, since they don't impede movement as much as lamellar does! So ideally a mix of both would be the optimal strat for maximum protection 😊
Though personally I find chainmail to be more comfortable to wear, so if I had to chose one it'd probably be that lol
