[Image Description: Animated gif. Stever Rogers and Tony Stark sitting on a roof. Steve asks "what if it was Rhodey?". Tony visualizes Rhodey in the Soldier's Chair (the image appears behind him in a glitchy way with lateral bands shifting sideways), turns to look behind him, and imagines himself (as a red stick figure) jumping from the tower with a big yellow ânopeâ accompanying him.]
bingo stuff (and slight fic spoilers) below:
Title: Nope - Pairing: Steve / Tony, Tony & Rhodey - Rating: Teen / SFW - Medium: digital art. One animated gif, two still images (sort-of crops of the gif)
Prompts:
- fill for @steverogersbingoâs prompt âJames Rhodesâ,
- fill for @tonystarkbingoâs prompt âTonyâs poor life choicesâ (because maybe he doesnât really jump from the Towerâs roof but he does seriously consider it),
- fill for @lgbtqbingoâs prompt âIâm not ready, sorryâ (because Tonyâs knee-jerk reaction is that he really isnât ready to think about what would have happened if Rhodey had been WinterSoldier-ed, and because Steve asking him that is the first step to - make love not war - and end up together in the fic)
- fill for @anyfandomgoesbingoâs prompt ânightmaresâ because for Tony, Rhodey being Winter-Soldiered is the stuff of nightmares (and if he did not have nightmares about it before that conversation because he was blocking out that idea he definitely will now).

Summary:Â Hurt, hungry, and on the run, the Winter Soldier doesnât have a lot of safe options to go to for help. Figuring that any friend of Captain Steve Rogers is unlikely to be HYDRA, Bucky takes a chance and reaches out to the first Avenger he can find. It works out better than anyone could have expected. Eventually.
My thoughts: Ohhhh, this one took me a while to finish, but in the end it was so wonderfully worth it. A recently post-TWS James manages to track down an off the grid Bruce Banner for help, and an unlikely alliance and friendship forms between this odd duo. Bruceâs compassion and utter refusal to see James as anything less than a human being is so heartwarming, and seeing James slowly beginning to trust Bruce and coming to terms with his personhood again is absolutely lovely. I hope you guys love it too.

Summary:
This is a podfic of Orbingarrow's Story.
It had been an adventure, navigating the sweetly apologetic Bucky Barnes, who haunted the tower most days, and the the Winter Soldier, who occasionally inhabited Barnesâs body. The Winter Soldier was not apologetic; he was scary. And he was currently chilling out, uninvited, in Tony's lab.
âLeave,â Tony said, because Tony was either a dead man or not, and there wasnât much he could do about it before coffee.
âOr you could give me permission to be here,â the Winter Soldier suggested.
âI donât let strangers poke around my stuff,â Tony grumbled, as he walked past the Soldier to take a seat at his workbench.
âEasily solved,â the Soldier deflected. âGet to know me.â

Title: Rocket Science
Author: @orbingarrow
Artist: @marsmaywander
Pairing: Tony Stark/Bucky Barnes
Rating: G
Warnings: None
Summary:Â Sleep-deprived and under-caffeinated, grad student Tony falls asleep in a conveniently empty classroom and wakes up in the middle of Bruceâs Physics 101 course. After seeing a groggy Tony fumble a simple question, actual-student Bucky offers to tutor him. In a moment of âoh no; heâs cuteâ panic, Tony takes him up on it. Now, in addition to his already complicated life, Tony has to figure out the answer to the incredibly messy question: âHow do you look like youâre failing the class, when you literally wrote the book?â
Sam and Rhodey- AU. Our friends are flirting at a bar, and weâre the wingmen so weâre talking and oh godâ where did our friends go???
Rhodey rolls his eyes as Tony slides up next to the guy - Mr.Tall, Dark, and Scowly - and waves at the bartender for another round.
Another roundfor himself. Rhodey gives two minutes before Mr. Scowlychases Tony away, and while Tony will need another drink before scouting outthe next target, Rhodey will need another drink to deal with that.
Tony had beenthe one to drag Rhodey to the bar under the clause to find someone for Rhodey, but Rhodey doesnât mind. Rhodey likes to find people at his ownpace, and Tonyâs picks always have a touch more dramatic flair than Rhodeylikes for himself.
âLet me guess, the other one is yours,â a man says, sliding onto the stool next to him andnodding over to where Tony is chatting the guy (who now scowls less, at least. It must be going well).
âOh no. Youtoo?â Rhodey asks, and gestures for the bartender to refill his new friendâsglass as well.
âYup, me too.Had to drag his ass out of his apartment, but look at him now. Baby bird isgetting his wings back,â the man teases. The manâs grin is soft, though, andfond in a way that Rhodey recognizes keenly from his friendship with Tony.Rhodey trusts his ability to read people, and he decides that he likes thisman.
âJames Rhodes,âhe says, holding a hand out for introduction. âCall me Rhodey.â
âSam Wilson,âSam replies with a smile, taking Rhodeyâs hand. âMost people just call me by myfirst name.â
Samâs friendturns out to be James Barnes (who goes by Bucky, but Sam wants to know what isso wrong with the name James?). They spend a few minutes talking shit abouttheir friend and what Bucky and Tony get up to, but then the conversationshifts to themselves. Rhodey is pleased with his character assessment when allSam does is raise his eyebrows and snort when Rhodey tells him that Bucky ischatting up Tony Stark, before he asks Rhodey what heâs doing inBrooklyn.
âSlumming it,âis Rhodeyâs response, enjoying the way that Sam squawks in protest.
Turns out thatthey both have the Air Force in common, though Rhodey is only on leave whileSam left the pararescue service after his co-pilot went down. Itâs a bit of aheavy topic for a first meeting, so they swerve away to finding out if theyhave friends in common or have been stationed together. Rhodey outranks Sam bylike a lot, and Sam tosses âAnother drink for the Lieutenant Colonel over here, please!â at the bartender that Sam pays for himself.
âYou too, man,âRhodey says, signaling for another drink for Sam. âDidnât you learn anything inservice? Have to outdrink your superiors!â
They swap a fewmore military stories and talk about Samâs job at the VA. They talk about whatBrooklyn used to be, about how Sam is handling the move from D.C., about placestheyâve been and places they want to go.
Then thebartender is calling last call, and Rhodey looks down at his watch.
âOh, wow. Damn, look at the time,â Sam says, pulling out his phone.
Rhodey looksaround for Tony, frowning when he doesnât see Tony or Samâs friend Bucky.Rhodey checks his phone, and sees a text.
Nice catch, buddy. Use protection and get his number! Iâll distract the friend. Work yourmagic. XOXO
Rhodey shakeshis head at Tonyâs text. Rhodey looks up to see Sam realizing that theyâve beenditched.
âGot time forone last round?â Rhodey asks, wrapping his fingers around his almost-finishedglass of beer so he doesnât give away his nervous tick by tapping them on thetable.
Sam smiles, wideand easy. âYeah, I got the time. Got to admit though, Iâm hoping I at least gotyour number, too.â
Rhodey grins ashe waves for one last round. âThe number you have. If thereâs anything else youwant, you better bring your A-game.â
Hi there! I has a prompt! Steve has told the Avengers at various points what a ladies man Bucky was back in the day and at some point suggested that he could give Tony a run for his money in the saucy flirt department. Tony doesn't believe it and challenges Bucky to lay it on him. Maybe even in front of the team? Idk, I just picture a tongue tied Tony and oodles of tension. <3
A/N: Hi! I tweaked the prompt a little but I really like how it turned out and I hope you do too! <3 ~Arrow

Back in the Day (Before the Potted Plants)
âBucky can do it.â
The entire team groaned. Â âBucky can do itâ was pretty much Steveâs solution for anything at that point. Â As if through sheer force of stubbornness, Steve could convince the other Avengers to give Bucky a mission. Â But that wasnât how things worked with the Avengers. Not anymore. Â And Bucky wasnât ready. Â Everyone but Steve could see it.
âI can do it,â Clint said.
The âitâ in question really shouldnât be that hard. Â Tony was going to a fancy party later that evening, and he needed a reason to slip off to a very specific guest bedroom so he could track down some long-forgotten HYDRA microfilm that Maria Hill thought was hidden there. Â Itâd be suspicious if Tony walked upstairs alone. Â No one was going to give him a second glance if he was kissing a stranger on the way up.
So that was the problem and Clint was a workable solution. Â He was relatively unknown. Â If he wasnât carrying a bow on his back, no one ever recognized him as an Avenger.
âHawkeye it is,â Tony said.
âShouldnât you practice?â Steve asked. Â From the smirk on his face, he was clearly ribbing them.
âThink I can kiss Stark fine tonight on the first try,â Clint said smartly.
âI dunno,â Natasha said, her smile full of mischief. Â âYouâre going to need to make it convincing, and you are straighter than your arrows.â
âOh for fuckâs sake, look--â Â Clint stood, marched over to Tony and paused.
Tony didnât like to be touched. Â He appreciated that Clint waited. Â And rather than nod, Tony just leaned up to close the short distance between them and opened his mouth into a kiss. Â It was brief, but apparently believable, since when he pulled back, they were met with applause.
âBelievable enough for you?â Tony asked Steve.
Steve shrugged. Â âBuckyâd do it better.â
âThe Bucky whoâs barely said one word to any of us but you in a month?â Tony asked. Â âAnd lurks behind the potted plants? Â That Buckyâs going to come to this party, charm me enough that itâll convince the assholes whoâve known me since I was a teenager, and then kiss me up the stairs?â
There was no missing Tonyâs doubt. Â His voice was thick with it.
âIâm just sayinâ, back in the day, no one was a better flirt,â Steve insisted. âHeâd have charmed your pants off in under a minute.â
âThe other day I asked Barnes what kind of pizza he wanted and he said âroundâ and walked away,â Tony sighed. Â âIâm not seeing the charm.â
Steve started cackling. Â Cackling so hard he nearly fell off his chair, and Tony looked at Clint for help, because now that heâd repeated the conversation out loud, it did feel a little like maybe Barnes was trolling him. Â And trolling wasnât a far jump to normal-enough-to-join-the-team. Â At least this team.
âMaybe Bucky can help next time?â Bruce suggested. Â âFlirting with Tony comes up at least once every couple of months.â
âEveryone gets a try,â Clint said cheerfully. Â âWho would have ever thought your reputation for bagging strangers would come in so handy?â
âI was playing the long game,â Tony laughed. Â âIâm that damn smart.â
âSure you are, champ,â Steve smirked. Â
There was a flicker of movement out in the hall. Â Probably Bucky skulking again. Â How Steve thought that was mission-ready behavior, Tony couldnât guess.
Later that night, he wouldnât have to.
(Watch out for the break!)
*
The mission went tits up all of ten seconds in.
âShit, shitshitshit,â Clint swore into the comms. Â âJulia Clearwaterâs here. Â I gotta go before she sees me.â
âWhat?â Tony whispered into his comm.
âShe knows who I am. Â She knows what I do. Â And she is not a friendly. Â If she spots me talking to you, itâs game over.â
âNat, can you cover?â Steve asked into the comm.
âNegative. Â Julia knows me too. Â Sheâs ex-SHIELD. Â Bruce?â
âRight,â Bruce replied. Â âJust take a few seconds to teach me how to blend into a fancy party like that and also how not to make a face when Tonyâs tongue is in my mouth and--â
âCap, youâre up,â Tony mumbled as he took a drink of his champagne.
âThatâs not happening,â Natasha said. Â âSteveâs way too recognizable.â
âBucky can do it,â Steve interrupted. Â âHeâs shadowing tonight, so heâs already around.â
âAnd you were going to tell us he was shadowing when?â Tony asked.
âWhen anything went wrong and we needed a sniper,â Steve sighed. Â âOur sniper was going to be occupied by your tongue. Â Natasha knew.â
âAnd I agreed it was a good idea,â Natasha added.
âWeâre gonna talk about this later,â Tony whispered.
âWeâre out of options,â Steve said. Â âSo we call the mission or you give Bucky a chance.â
âWhat about his arm?â Bruce asked. Â âThatâs a pretty notable feature. Â An ex-SHIELD operative might recognize it from the ghost stories.â
âHeâs got it covered. Â Literally,â Steve explained. Â âNat gave him a photostatic bracelet. Â His hand will look human.â
âAnd what about a tux?â Tony asked.
âMâon it,â Buckyâs voice came in quietly through the comm.
There was a telling thud. Â Tony hoped whoeverâs tux Bucky was âborrowingâ was asshole enough to deserve the rough treatment.
âRecognized a HYDRA operative about my size,â Bucky said with his ever-spooky calm. Â âTwo birds, one stone.â
âThen come on in,â Tony said. Â âThe sooner the better, before I change my mind. Â Oh look-- itâs Hammer-- perfect-- exactly what I need.â
The last few words were spoken more to himself, though Tony knew the entire team would cringe on his behalf. Â Ever since Justin Hammer weaseled his way out of prison, the man had made it his mission to interject himself into Tonyâs life whenever possible. Â Often in downright creepy ways. Like flirting at a party like this and possibly ruining everything.
If Bucky came in and wasnât convincing, Hammer would be the very first to point it out.
âDonât want to talk to you,â Tony said plainly as Justin greeted him. Â âI donât like you. Â We arenât friends. Â Go away.â
âIf youâd let me explain,â Justin pleaded overly loud. Â To anyone nearby this was a scene waiting to happen. Â Fuck.
âNot interested,â Tony insisted. Â âI would rather--â
âDr. Stark?â a pleasant voice asked, cutting Tony off before he could launch into a Green Eggs and Hamâs worth of reasons why Hammerâs false apologies were going to go unheard forever.
Tony and Justin both turned at the same time, and it was a good thing Justinâs attention was fully on the interruption because Tonyâs face muscles definitely twitched and his mouth dropped open at least half an inch.
Bucky Barnes stood in front of them, looking every bit the 28 years old heâd been pre-war and smoking hot. Â His suit fit him like Tom Ford had hand-stitched it with love, and the way he looked at Tony-- like a mix of hero worship and fuck-me-eyes-- was so incredibly spot on, Tonyâs brain did a triple take. Â From the way Justin was eye-molesting Bucky, the get-up was believable as hell.
âDunno if you remember me,â Bucky continued easily. Â âWe met at Darla Bishopâs party,â Â he added, the words almost electric with pleasant (fake) memories. Â âThought Iâd let you get me that drink you owe me.â
Bucky looked at Tony with hungry eyes. Â Like after a cocktail, getting laid was an absolute surety.
âYouâd be hard to forget,â Tony said softly.
It was soft because his brain forgot how words worked there for a second, but the effect was just right. Â Justin would certainly walk away with the impression that this wasnât the first time these two had met up for a tumble.
âI missed Darlaâs party,â Justin piped in. Â âAnd Tony here should probably avoid drinking too many. Â Heâs got a reputation for trouble after a few, if you know what I mean.â
Justin leaned toward Bucky and tugged roughly at the front of Buckyâs suit. Â
To Buckyâs credit (and a little to Tonyâs disappointment) he let Justin live.
âI donât know, actually,â Bucky said, taking a step closer to Tony and using his elbow to brush away Justinâs hand in the process. Â He only had eyes for Tony as he smiled at him and added, âTonyâs never struck me as anything less than a gentleman.â
Buckyâs smile was easy and his eyes were full of mischief. Â Like that was an inside joke between them. Like there were a hundred other inside jokes between them waiting to be known.
âGentleman might be a stretch,â Tony said with a small smile of his own. Â âBut flattery will get you everywhere.â
âIt ainât flattery if itâs true,â Bucky said.
God his voice. Â There was a hint of a Brooklyn drawl, wrapped in heat and warmth and promise. Â It was like the Winter Soldier had never existed. All Tony (or anyone watching) was picking up from this encounter was Do Me vibes by the boatload.
âTony? Â A gentleman?â Justin scoffed. Â âPull my other leg while youâre at it.â
âI thought you were looking to be friends with me, Hammer,â Tony reminded Justin.
âEh, wasnât going to work out. Â But this--â he said, pointing between himself and Bucky. Â âThis is much more appealing. Â I can feel the heat. How much for the night? Â Two? Three hundred dollars?â
Oh god. Hammer really was looking to get himself punched, and if it would not have blown the mission Tony would have been first in line. Â Honestly, how important could that microfilm be, anyway?
Thankfully, Bucky had it handled.
âBuddy,â Bucky drawled, the very picture of unimpressed. Â âI wouldnât look at you twice if it won me a million dollars both times.â
âBut youâll look at this guy?â Justin asked, annoyed. Â âThey called him the Merchant of Death! Â Do you know that or are you too young to remember?â
âI know,â Bucky said plainly. Â âAnd I also know heâs got four more doctorates than you, a much better sense of humor, a real nice ass and heâs doinâ his part to make the world a better place every chance he gets. Comparatively, youâre a goblin. Â Go away.â
Tony stood in stunned silence. Â That might have been the nicest defense of himself heâd ever heard and it was made a hundred times better by the way it shut Justin right the fuck down.
âYour loss,â Justin sneered, before he stormed away.
âMarry me,â Tony insisted, as he turned to Bucky. Â âWeâll go to Vegas right now. Â Just say the word.â
It was all part of the act, obviously, but Tony still enjoyed the way it caught Bucky by surprise and caused him to smile. Â A real, genuine smile. Â The few nosy people within hearing distance smiled, too.
âWhat would you do if I said yes?â Bucky asked.
âCall the airport. Â Have them fuel up my jet.â
âYouâre somethinâ else, Tony Stark,â Bucky said, before biting at his bottom lip appealingly. Â Like he was playfully considering the offer. Â âMânot one of those guys who buys somethinâ before he tries it out and we didnât have enough time to get acquainted last time we met. Â Think we should fix that before you propose.â
âThere are rooms upstairs,â Tony suggested, dragging his brain back to the mission at hand since Bucky seemed to be doing fine keeping his eyes on the prize. Â âIf you wanted to catch up somewhere a little more intimate.â
âIntimate is good,â Bucky agreed.
He closed the space between them, took the champagne flute out of Tonyâs hand and finished what was left, letting his tongue flick over the rim to catch the last drop of alcohol. Â Tonyâs brain flooded him with unhelpful imagery about all the things that tongue could do.
Not helpful. Â
They needed to be seen together a little longer. Â Not everyone who would notice Tony missing had caught sight of him yet in the first place. Â But they would. Â Bucky was definitely a head-turner.
âHow about one more drink first?â Tony asked. Â âThen we head up?â
âIâm all yours,â Bucky agreed. Â âLead the way.â
Tony put a hand on the small of Buckyâs back to guide him, and forced himself to ignore the growing warmth in his chest when he did. Â It was probably just the alcohol. Â He didnât drink much anymore. Â Easy explanation.
âIt was Nolan, right?â Tony asked conversationally, after heâd ordered them each a champagne. Â âLike the famous pitcher?â
That was Clintâs cover story and since Clint was on the invite list, it made sense to assume Bucky had the same plan. Â
âNolan, yeah. Â My dad was a big fan of baseball,â Bucky confirmed. Â âI got a brother named Ryan and everything.â
Tony smiled. Â âYou ever play?â
âIn High School. Â Probably coulda played for a small college but all I ever wanted to do was go to NYU and then be a sports writer. Â No other dream would do.â
After the bartender handed over their drinks, Bucky angled in toward Tony, leaning against the counter to effectively cut them off from interruption. Â It was incredible to watch him work. Â There was just something about the way Bucky carried himself. Â Something about the light in his eyes. Cap was not wrong. Â Bucky Barnes was criminally good at flirting.
The only problem (and it wasnât much of a problem) was that theyâd drawn enough attention that people were hovering closer. Â Any talk at all would have to be in character. Â Easy enough, really, or it would have been if Buckyâs presence wasnât so damn distracting. Â Tonyâs thoughts all seemed to lag a second or two behind the rest of him. Â
âHowâs that working out for you?â Tony asked. Â âThat dream?â
âMâhere, ainât I?â Bucky asked. Â âStill looking for my big break, though. Â In New York, itâs all about who you know.â
âYou know me.â
Bucky turned a little more and leaned in fully against Tony. Â He looked down at him with an expression of open invitation. Â âNot really. Â But Iâd like to.â Â
âI can finish this fast,â Tony said, draining the last of the champagne.
âAlready done with mine,â Bucky said more quietly. Â He tipped his head forward slightly as Tony sat his glass on the counter.
It took absolutely no thinking for Tony to lean in and kiss him. Â
That kiss with Clint earlier? Â That had been a mission kiss: convincing without a stir of feeling. Â This kiss? Â It was a kiss worthy of romantic acts of stupidity. Â It was a kiss that would have launched a thousand ships. Tony would have bought ESPN the very next morning and given it to Fake!Nolan for keepsies if that kiss had been real.
âUpstairs,â Tony growled.
By then, no one was going to doubt they were walking up to one of the bedrooms to fuck. Â If nothing else, Tonyâs erection broadcast that for anyone who was looking closely enough to see. (Next time Barnes flirted on a mission, Tony was going to ditch the tight pants.)
They found the bedroom they needed, and it was incredibly surreal to walk in behind Bucky, close the door, then turn around to come face to face with the Winter Soldier. Â Surreal enough that Tony took a quick step backwards.
Barnes was still gorgeous. Â That hadnât changed. Â But his expression was somewhere between resting murder face and mission report and all the warmth was gone.
âHey there, Killer,â Tony greeted. Â âFancy meeting you here.â
If there was disappointment in his voice, it wasnât intentional. Â It just was. Â And if Tony thought he saw a flicker of hurt pass through Buckyâs eyes, that was likely all in his imagination.
âWhereâs the microfilm?â Bucky asked.
âHill said itâs hidden in a false panel in the desk,â Natasha chimed in through the comm.
For the second time in two minutes, Tony jumped. Â He had completely forgotten the team could hear everything through their communicators. Â
Bucky moved to the desk and opened the top drawer while Tony sat down on the bed and watched him work. It took Bucky less than a minute to locate the secret latch and remove the microfilm.
âWhat now?â Bucky asked.
âWeâve got to stay in here for a while,â Tony said. Â âLong enough that itâs believable we were up here enjoying ourselves.â
âSo that should take what, exactly?â Clint asked through the comms. Â His grin was audible. Â âThirty? Â Forty seconds?â
The oomph he made a second later was incredibly satisfying.
âWhoâs in there defending my honor?â Tony asked.
âMy elbow slipped,â Bruce insisted. Â âNot much room to work in this van.â
âThat was totally on purpose,â Clint whined.
âWould I do that?â Bruce asked.
âMuting the comms so Tweedle-Dee and Tweedle-Dum here arenât a distraction,â Natasha chimed in. Â âWeâll only unmute if we have something relevant to say. Â You do the same.â Â
âGood work, you two,â Steve added. Â âGet out safe.â
âCopy,â Bucky said.
The line went silent. Â As silent as the room.
âYou can sit on the bed,â Tony said, to fill the quiet. Â âI donât bite. Â Not unless you ask me nicely.â
âNo one can see us,â Bucky said simply. Â âYou donât have to keep up the act.â
âWhat act?â Tony asked. Â He really was coming up blank. Â Heâd been himself all evening. Â It was Bucky who had been winning the Oscar down there.
âActinâ like you donât mind me beinâ here,â Bucky said. Â And well, the good news was that Bucky wasnât in automaton mode any longer. Â The bad news was his voice was laced with buried hurt. Â Where in the hell did that come from?
âI donât mind you being here,â Tony said quickly. Â He paused. Â Considered. Â Spoke gently. Â âAnd-- just for the record-- I donât mind that you took over for Clint. Â Iâm grateful. Â Weâve got the microfilm, the mission went off without a hitch, and Hammer saw me walk upstairs with the best-looking guy at the party. Â This is a win/win/win.â
âYou told the team I lurk behind potted plants.â
âBecause you do lurk behind potted plants,â Tony pointed out carefully.
âI linger; I donât lurk. I know the difference.â
âUmmm⌠apparently I donât?â Tony asked.  âFeel free to explain.  Believe it or not, I wasnât trying to be a dick about the⌠not lurking.  It hadnât occurred to me there were subtleties involved.â
God, though. Whether Tonyâd meant it or not, replaying that team conversation in his head was painful.  Heâd talked about Bucky like he was a thing⌠not a person.  And if Buckyâd heard, well, that sucked.  It got worse as Bucky continued.
âI donât like people lookinâ at me,â he said softly. âSânever worked out well. Â Not in the war and definitely not with HYDRA. Â Always meant I was in some kind of trouble. Â Pain was cominâ my way. Â Or somethingâ worse than pain.â
âThat wasnât--â Tony tried to explain. Â
âYou act like it makes me broken,â Bucky cut him off. Â âThat thereâs somethinâ wrong with me cause Iâm not ready to be out in the open and thereâs not. Â Mânot broken. Â Iâm workinâ through a lot.â
Bucky shut his mouth and looked away. Â Tony had never been so relieved to be off comms. Â If he fucked up this conversation royally, he didnât need the whole team listening to him crash and burn.
He watched Bucky for a few seconds. Â Did some mental recalibration. Â Channeled Rhodey circa 1987. (Tonyâs college peers had not been kind.) (Except for Rhodey, whoâd taught him what friendship could mean.) (And Tony could pay that forward. Â He could.)
âWill you look at me?â Tony asked gently. Â âPlease?â
Bucky turned his head grudgingly.
âIâm sorry,â Tony said simply and sincerely. Â âThat was beyond shitty of me. Â I donât think youâre broken. Â I think youâre amazing.â
âBullshit,â Bucky grumbled. Â
âGeezus, what you did down there?â Tony continued. Â âThat was incredible. Â What you do every day to move forward and get on in the world... thatâs incredible, too. Â I should have tried harder to make you feel comfortable in the tower, and from now on I will-- if youâll let me. Â We can be friends. Â I dunno. Â Hang out, or something. Â Iâve seen you eyeing Dum-E and U. Â Iâll introduce you, if you want. Â Theyâre pretty cool. Â Way cooler than Steve.â
Bucky considered Tonyâs words. Â âIâd like that.â
Tony nods. Â âIâd like that, too.â
*
Turned out, Bucky was awesome company. Â Sure, he faded into the shadows a lot and occasionally he stared at Tony with his Resting Murder Face and that was a little unnerving, and every once in a while JARVIS would report that Bucky had done something paranoid like check all the light fixtures in the tower for HYDRA listening devices. Â All in all, that was small potatoes compared to the fun they had together otherwise.
They shared a love for science and technology, greasy pizza and yelling at the television during bad sci-fi movies. Â Most nights when Tony and Bruce were in the lab, Buckyâd join them and sit quietly off to the side, taking apart a toaster or reading up on motorcycle repair.
It was a comfortable friendship, and one Tony valued a lot. Â Which was why, when his thoughts turned a little more toward the romantic side of friendship, he tried to squelch them immediately. Â Bucky had never given any indication he was interested and Tony didnât want to push. Â But he never could quite shake the memory of that kiss, and the dwelling on it always left him wanting more. Â Sure there was a lot he could lose, but oh the things he could gain.
The very best things.
Yeah. Â
Cold showers were Tonyâs new best friend.

It was a month or two later when a new easy-peasy mission came in that would involve Tony and a date. Â No one batted an eyelash when Bucky volunteered. Â He could even keep his previous Nolan identity since many of the people from the party before would be attending the new mission party as well.
Tony RSVPâd with Nolan as his date.
Theyâd just snuck off down a side corridor to get to the room they needed for their mission (under the guise of wandering off to find a less public place to grope each other) when they heard footsteps coming up behind them. Â Heavy footsteps. Â The sort youâd expect from goons with guns.
âShit,â Tony swore.
âSecurity cameras show youâve got incoming,â Steve said over the comm.
âNo facial recognition available,â Natasha added. Â âMay just be hired help.â
âOnly confront if necessary,â Steve reminded them.
âThatâd be your cue to start sucking face, guys,â Clint chimed in.
Bucky didnât need to be told twice. Â
âYou good?â he asked Tony.
âSo good,â Tony said honestly.
Bucky had Tony shoved against a wall with their mouths together before another second passed.
Tonyâs brain went blank. Â Bucky was flush against him, warm and protective. The kiss was everything Tony had imagined over and over and over in the weak moments when heâd let himself dwell on their previous kiss.
Buckyâs hand wandered up Tonyâs side and grasped at his suit jacket and Tony heard himself make a plaintive, needy noise he was totally going to deny later. Â There was just something about the way Bucky kissed him. Something that was familiar and head spinning and perfect.
Tony wasnât content to stay passive, and he let his hands wander over Buckyâs back and then down his biceps and there was the metal arm, and yup-- that did all kinds of things to short circuit Tonyâs thoughts and what even was that kink called? Â Because he had it. Â He so had it.
Time stood still. Â Everything but Bucky faded into the background. Â
âUh, team?â Steve asked. Â âThe coast is clear. Â Has been for like five minutes.â
Tony dragged himself out of the kiss and leaned his head back against the wall. Â âShit. Â Right. Â Mission.â Â He tried to word-make again with the addition of some verbs. Â âHeading that way now.â
Bucky pulled back and away, but not before placing one last kiss to Tonyâs forehead.
âTo be continued back at the tower?â Bucky asked, a hint of hope in his voice.
âTo be continued,â Tony agreed breathlessly. Â âYes. Â Absolutely. Â You are really good at that.â
âCanât wait to take my time with you,â Bucky said. âBeen wanting to try that again since the first night.â
âGod, me too,â Tony said enthusiastically. Â âI just didnât want to--â
âKeep it off the comms,â Steve groaned. Â âIâm gonna need brain bleach as it is.â
âYes, sir, Captain, sir,â Bucky quipped. Â âBut I make no promises once weâre back at the tower. Â Probably oughtta bunk with Nat for the night if you donât want to hear us across the hall.â
Tony laughed. Â They all knew just how much soundproofing had gone into the tower bedrooms, which made it all the more funny.
âI hate you both,â Steve said.
âNot as much as youâll hate us after tonight,â Tony taunted. Â And then because he could he leaned in for one more kiss.
âWe heard that,â Clint complained, then oomphed. Â There was a clatter, like people all moving around in the van at once. Â Then laughter. Â âOuch-- hey! Â No pinching! Â No fair!â
âAccident,â Natasha said. Â âMuting comms. Â You boys behave. Â Hail us if you need us.â
âCopy,â Bucky said.
The line went silent.
âYou really want to pick back up once weâre home?â Tony asked.
He thought he knew the answer but he still needed to have Bucky confirm. Needed to know it wasnât all some big misunderstanding that was going to end in heartache.
âHavenât thought of much else for a long time now,â Bucky admitted. Â âWhat I said to Hammer that first night-- that wasnât Nolan talkinâ, that was me. Â Even back when I was hidinâ in the plants, I wanted to know you. Â Wanted some of your spark for myself. Never met anyone who gives off so much light,â
Tony looked at Bucky in wonder. Â It didnât feel true but Tony knew with confidence Bucky wouldnât say it if it wasnât. Â He didnât do things he didnât want anymore.
âI donât know what to say that to that,â Tony replied quietly.
âYou donât have to say a thing,â Bucky assured him. Â âWeâve got all the time in the world to figure it out. Â For now letâs finish this mission so we can get back to the tower and find somethinâ better to do with our time. Iâm tired of waitinâ. Ready to get started.â
âThen Iâm all yours,â Tony agreed with a small, pleased smile. Â âLead the way.â
