More concept art, this time for Orb User. In order to get myself in the right mindset to design the “modern” design, I even drew a quick little scene from Super Mario Galaxy and a demonstration of how the enemy would interact with Mario. Looking back at it, I think the Subspace Army design might have been influenced by the Tiki Torch enemies in Donkey Kong Country Returns.
Here is the Orb User family, displaying each of the three designs. Even though I like to pair up the designs and colors like this, all three designs can come in all three colors. Though they are some of my favorite SMRPG enemies, they don't make for very exciting trophies.
Here are all three colors for all three designs of Orb User. I should mention that the green color set is based on an unused palette found in the game's data. On a side note, I personally prefer the name of the recolor, Orbison, to the name Orb User.
Orb User
Released: Sep. 26, 2014 Type: Enemy Game: Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
Surprise! It's a random Super Mario RPG enemy! The Orb User family is one of my favorites in the game, so I couldn't resist making them. Technically, this is a remake of a model I made back in 2011. It used a lot of primitives and intersecting shapes, so it wasn't much to look at. I'm much happier with how these models came out, even if it still uses some intersecting parts.
As you can see, I made three variations of the design: Classic, Modern, and Subspace. The center model is the original design, based closely on the game's sprites and official artwork. The Modern design on the left is inspired by Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario 3D World. Even the reflections in the orb are inspired by the art style of Galaxy. The behavior I imagined for it is somewhere between the Sentry Beam robot enemy and the game's Magikoopas. Finally, on the right is the Subspace design. It is based on the concept of what the monster would look like if it had been designed by Brawl's enemy design team. It even has a Subspace Army emblem on its back, not that you can see it from this angle. Unlike the other designs, this one has a segmented head that can stretch out to release magical energy.
