One of the best parts about the mineral and gem business is that there are many facets to it, no pun intended! There is the mineral/crystal side of the business, but there are also gem cutters, carvers, sculpture / free form cutters, designers, jewelers, miners, retails and more! Many of these require a great depth of knowledge and training. The work that goes into faceting a gemstone takes years to learn. Designers who use CAD take a minimum of a year to become truly proficient on just this tool, let alone the jeweler skills required to make the computer image come to life. I trained with the Gemology Institute of America’s and spent two years training under a gentleman who’s family roots were in the diamond trade. I love combining the gem and mineral world in the jewelry I create with my clients.
