View and Yellow Dung fly at Dancing Ledge today and buttercups at Lakeside Country Park yesterday
I thoroughly enjoyed a visit to Dancing Ledge and Durlston today for a seabird fix at beautiful coastal spots that I love to be with my first of two of my favourite birds the Guillemot and Razorbill seen this year alongside Shag, many Herring Gulls and a Great Black-backed Gull that tussled with a majestic Raven, an epic clash with two heavyweight birds. Seeing the seabirds, smelling the nesting birds at Durlston and hearing the Guillemots especially and Shags splashing in the sea below gave me an immersive seabird experience. Yellowhammer, Swallow, Roe Deer, Grey Seal, Wall Brown and Orange-tip butterflies, Broad-bodied Chaser dragonfly, scarlet pimpernel, sea campion, kidney vetch and pale flax were other highlights today.
With much more in between it was a day for delightful birds like Swift,
With many colourful flowers observed too like patches of pink thrift,
My first Brown Argus and Small Heath butterflies of the year, only my third sighting of a Shoveler at Lakeside this year, my first ever Cantharis Fusca or Dark Soldier beetle and dock were other highlights yesterday.
A view including a gorgeous cowslip covered field it was excellent to see the landscape carpeted with their uplifting yellow catching the sun's rays and the wind's soft caress to sparkle gold and a stunning Dingy Skipper butterfly at Magdalen Hill Down 18/04/2026.
On a thrilling spring afternoon my first Whitethroat of the year, Yellowhammer, Linnets, Goldfinch, Skylark heard, Slow worm, Common Lizard, my first ever Lesser Bloody-nosed beetle, milkwort, garlic mustard, germander speedwell, broomrape and ground ivy were other highlights. Green Hairstreak, Grizzled Skipper and Small Tortoiseshell were also great to tick off for the year alongside Dingy Skipper in a satisfying butterfly fix, my year list is into the teens on thirteen now and I saw ten of them today with Orange-tip, Green-veined White, Brimstone, Peacock, Red Admiral and lots of Holly Blues which I've had a strong start to the butterfly year for seeing a lot enjoyed again today the highest amount of butterflies I've seen in a day so far this year.
Female Reed Bunting and dandelion at Winnall Moors 09/04/2026. It was also fantastic and so rewarding on my lunch break to see and hear with their beautiful raspy song my first Sedge Warblers of the year at Winnall Moors today a sweet reunion with one of my favourite birds, a triumphant sound of spring. Moorhen, Greenfinch, comfrey, bluebells, Orang-tip and Holly Blue were other highlights between Winnall Moors, Winchester and Lakeside today and yesterday.
