Oracle!Tim has a wheelchair, but hates using it. He loudly insists he doesnât need to when almost anyone suggests it. He can get around just fine on crutches, and itâs bad enough the way people treat him like that; he refuses to have them literally looking down on him.
Except, see, the thing is⊠he does need it. By the end of the day navigating on his crutches, Tim hurts. His back is screaming from the shoulders down, his spine feels almost swollen with how it takes over his senses (burning, throbbing, every click & grind of bone like having a knife wedged between the vertebrae,) the skin on his legs feels like itâs trying to crawl off his body, and thereâs sharp needles of pain shooting through his leg muscles. If Tim spends the day on his feet/moving around a lot on his crutches, heâs going to spend the next 3 nights trying to be Oracle while flat on his back on the floor. (Tim does try to get around this by having wheelie chairs in all his offices and just not walking around much, but if the weather turns cold or a big storm blows in, even that wonât help.)
He gets better about it over time. Cass drags Tim into helping with her specific charity work, helping other disabled kids in Gotham. Tim ends up giving interviews in which he talks about being an ambulatory wheelchair user, how heâs treated when he goes out in the chair, how people act like itâs all a horrible lie if they ever see him get up from it, and how it combines with Timâs own pride & internalized ableism to lead to him gritting his teeth and just pushing through. âItâs not worth it,â he tells Vicki Vale, a rueful smile on his face. âItâs never worth it, to go home and lay on the floor in too much pain to move, just so the people at the grocery store donât see me in my chair. But I do it anyway, and Iâm probably going to keep doing it⊠so if you see me out in public, please ask me if Iâm being stupid, because thereâs a good chance the answer is yes.â People laugh. Vicki calls him brave for talking about it. Tim says if he can raise just a little attention, make people a little more aware of how they treat people in (and out) of wheelchairs, heâll have done something good.
Then he goes home. Lays on the floor. And tries not to cry while one of his loved ones rubs tiger balm into his back, because no, people donât understand, it fucking hurts.
Reverse Robins Tim changing his name from Oracle to Spoiler after Stephanie's death.
Realized Oracle!Timâs hero name is probably something he came up with on the fly when put on the spot and didnât intend to be a name. So it probably started as with someone demanding to know who he was & how he got this information, and Tim going, âYou can think of me as your eye in the sky.â
And then. They did. For a few issues, they answered mysterious phone calls with âEye in the sky?â It turns out itâs Timâs username on hacker forums. Tim needs to block someoneâs screen and itâs just a green square with âE.I.T.S.â on it (later, he will add an eye logo.)
Tim didnât even realize it was a cohesive identity until a hero he was in call with casually called him âEyesâ or maybe âSky,â and he realized it stuck.
âŠOr maybe Iâll stick with Oracle. I honestly might just stick with Oracle. Itâs literally 5am right now, this might be a really bad idea.
So you made Oracle Tim get shot? I had in mind the reason he was incapacitated was because of the aftereffects of Joker Jr. from Batman Beyond. Tim had been electrocuted multiple times over the course of three weeks, so he was left with chronic pain and DID. (Cabe aclarar que las persona con esta enfermedad mental pueden vivir una vida normal.)
Here I have drawings of Oracle Tim. I named him Heimdall, the all-seeing Norse god. He has scars from cuts on his surgically removed cheeks, but he was never able to completely remove them.
And I based Heimdall's logo on JARVIS and FRIDAY.
I was inspired by a fanart by Dickbabs dhsabdjasd
I am aware of the Joker Junior plot, but no, itâs not what I went with. I was actually inspired by Timâs fake injury from his original Red Robin run.
For my Tim, it isnât a ruse. After a personal mission lead to him being entangled with the League of Assassins, Timâs exit from the League left Raâs both impressed at his gumption & offended at his arrogance. The family will take years to get confirmation, but the order was not âshoot to killâ but specifically to injure Tim to the point heâd need a Lazarus Pit to go back to the life heâd had before. Raâs wanted to break Timâs pride and have Tim come crawling back to the League, but Timâs stubbornness combined with his denial at the permanence of the injury lead to Tim doubling down on recovering. Even once Tim did accept that heâd need mobility aids for the rest of his life, Tim sure as hell wasnât giving Raâs the pleasure of having Tim need him to go back to heroing.
Part of me does feel like I should rename the role, but I donât have a lot of ideas for it. For now, Iâm sticking with Oracle; âI see what you donât, and if you ignore my advice we both know what happens wonât be pretty.â
(Also, for angst purposes, Tim was still shot when he was about to give a speech. Duke & Cass were both in attendance, but Duke was at the other end of the room and turned awayâhis future sight alerted him to the fleeing crowd rather than the source, and he turned in time to see the future-echo of Tim hitting ground but not in time to stop itâand Cass was closer but only had Dukeâs reaction as warning herself.)

Yet more Reverse!Robins
EDIT: Now on AO3.
(Calling back to my tags on this post, and one of the images from this one that live rent free in my brain.)
Joker gets bored torturing Jason on his own after a couple days, and sends out invites to all the other rogues (or at least, the ones heâs pretty sure wonât rat him out and end the fun) about a âsurprise presentâ heâs working on for Batman. Steph has absolutely no interest involving herself in Jokerâs nonsense, so she immediately throws it out and focuses on securing her area of the city to keep her people safe. She doesnât think much more of it.
Six days later, Tim shows up at the door of one of her clubs. Not in costume, barely hiding his identity, hardly even armed (like, the bare minimum for walking around this part of town this late at night, and most of that is artfully hidden in his crutches & leg braces.) Aside from Damian or Bruce crashing the party to accuse Steph of stuff (that like 60% of the time she didnât even do,) none of the Bats have ever approached Steph in an actual place of business before. Sheâs curious. She tells security to let him in, and show him to her table.
Okay, but in the Reverse!Robins AU, when Bruce is dead & everything is a mess, hereâs how Jason gets the Red Robin arc:
Jason just wants to help, but it gets spoiled at every turn.
Damian is having an existential crisis because heâs been working so hard for nearly a decade to define his own path/identity, but thereâs a big part of him that still feels like itâs his duty to follow in his fatherâs footsteps. Itâs tearing him apart inside over whether heâs a bad brother for trying to take what heâs already abdicated, or a bad brother for forcing the others to carry the mantle, or a bad son for not stepping up, even though thatâs what Talia wanted more than Bruce, but Bruce & Damian arenât that close since Steph died, and maybe Damianâs been wrong this whole timeâ
Cass doesnât know how to process grief really, because the only huge losses in her life are Stephâs death & Timâs mobility, and with the latter she was mostly relieved he wasnât dead too. Sheâs getting everyoneâs grief 24/7, but she doesnât know how to talk to them about it or her own. She declared long ago she wanted to be Batman, and everyone seemed very happy then, but suddenly she doesnât feel ready for it. And on top of all that, sheâs the only one Dick even tries to spend time with, because sheâs the only one who doesnât either lash out at him or try to get him to talk when he doesnât want to.
Duke is trying to hold everyone together, and as the oldest heâs trying to get Bruceâs affairs in order, and itâs such a mess he actually has to stop being the Signal for a little while. Even though heâs normally the familyâs emotional rock, heâs frazzled & exhausted, he doesnât know what to do, and his temper is burning pretty short even as he tries to hold it together for his siblings.
Dick honestly seems to hate Jason, for reasons Jason cannot comprehend. Every time Jason tries to reach out to Dick, he ends up getting screamed at or having something thrown at him, and eventually Jason just gives up. (Dick is a complete fucking mess, because just as he was starting to settle in at the Manor and find something resembling stability again, his foster father went & died on him.)
Steph is AWOL since the funeral, and generally ignores âfamily troublesâ like the plague.
Tim still figures out Bruce is still alive. He doesnât want to get the younger kidsâ hopes up, so he approaches Duke, Damian, & Cass with his evidence instead of calling a family meeting. It⊠does not go well.
Jason beats a retreat from the tension at the manor, telling Alfred heâs going to crash with Tim for a while. Alfred, Cass, & Duke all try to hide their relief over not having to worry about Jason for a little while. Wrongly believing Jason & Tim will keep eachother grounded.
While at Timâs, Jason find his folder of evidence. Jason immediately confronts Tim with it, and Tim starts to get defensive before realizing Jason believes him. They go over all of it, as well as Timâs plans & theories for where/how to find further information.
But Jason sees several problems Tim refuses to acknowledge. Gotham needs Oracle, now more than ever. And a not insignificant part of Timâs plan relies on exploiting the resources of a certain obvious but unnamed group. Everyone knows Raâs put the hit out on Tim all those years ago as a sort of âif I canât have you, no one canâ thing, and either intended to end Timâs vigilante career or figured being unable to stand without crutches was significant enough punishment. But only Jason was there when Tim found the card inviting Tim back for a dip in the Pit whenever Tim was ready to admit he âneededâ it; Jason leant Tim his lighter to burn the note. So Jason might be the only one who knows Raâs has been waiting for Tim to come groveling back ever since that bullet clipped Timâs spine. And Raâs definitely wonât deign to help Tim without âfixingâ him first.Â
Jasonâs not about to let his big brother get sucked back into that mess. Not Raâs spiral of abuse & manipulation, not the potentially devastating side effects of the Pit, and not the struggles with worth Timâs had since he had to hang up his cape. No way.
And Talia has made it very clear sheâd be interested in training Jason.
So Jason steals Timâs plans. Jason modifies them. Jason tells Tim that Jasonâs going to go stay with the Titans, because Jason needs to get out of Gotham for a little while, and asks Tim to cover for him.
Jason steals a credit card for one of Damianâs alternate identities, knowing full well Damianâs too much of a mess to notice the charges until itâs too late.
Jason zetas to San Francisco, and asks the Titans to cover for him if anyone comes asking.
Jason uses Damianâs card to buy a plane ticket.
By the time anyone realizes whatâs happened, Jasonâs in too deep to risk extraction. After all, you canât just flatter your way into an al Ghulâs favor only to back out at the last second, and no one in the family is emotionally equipped for delicacy right now.
Tim just has to do his best to make things easier for Jason, play dumb when anybody asks, and pray he isnât setting his baby brother up to get murdered.
Whatâs the funniest part of my Reverse!Robins AU?
Youâre all wrong, itâs Tim & Stephâs love/hate, friends-to-dating-to-breakup-to-death-to-enemies-who-spite-flirt-to-reluctant-allies-who-still-flirt-to-lovers roller coaster.
