I could have predicted it; it was pretty much inevitable, but Google have unveiled a new operating system! Based on Google's Chrome browser it has been aptly dubbed 'Chrome', with the actual computers being called Chromebooks.
The whole OS is nicely summed in the Chrombook's tagline: "Nothing but the web". It is literally, nothing but the web, everything is in 'the cloud' (a phrase I have never liked much), your documents, your programs, your games even, are all remote. In other words, it is Chrome, but as a computer! Simple!
Although I have skepticism about some of Google's claims - It's battery life, it's loading time, and it's anti-viral protection.
Firstly is the battery life. Google claims it can run all day, although I looked at their specs and actually it only has 8.5 hours of battery life... I know this says continual usage yes, but that's still not a day. Some people really do love their computers that much.
Secondly loading time, it's claimed it can boot in 8 seconds. Yeah, okay, this one I do believe, it makes a good point. Although I keep my computer slick and fast, so with just a little bit off effort every now and then, it now boots but in around 3 minutes. Now 8 seconds sounds tempting, but I think the other features of a PC is worth these extra couple of minutes...
Lastly, not needing anti-virus software... You mean not needing it yet... Sooner or later people will find a way to get into the OS and viruses will be made. It is true though, you won't need it, because this software is built in. But it's not full proof, nowhere near, your computer can still be infected.
Don't get me wrong though, I love the idea, I want one! I really do, the features are amazing! Being able to access your files anywhere, it's compatibility (albeit with the Chrome browser), automatic updates, ease of use. It's something so original.
I think it's about time that something new came out, and at least attempt a slice at Microsoft's massive share in the industry. Although I am still skeptical to its success. Yes, I do believe that it is the future of computers (although I prefer more of a hybrid thing; I like stuff to be local ^^) but I don't think it's time yet, it won't catch, and I find most people either very conservative, or loyal (especially Mac users), to their operating system.
It's a predictable move for Google, their aim, just as it's always been, is to move people away from desktop applications onto web-based applications. But will it work? Who knows? We'll find out on the 15th June I suppose...
