#Repost @seashepherd ・・・ Illegal Fishing in Antarctica Shut Down by Sea Shepherd. #WATCH the video at the Sea Shepherd Global Facebook page. At the start of Operation Icefish in 2014, Sea Shepherd set out to locate and shut down illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing in Antarctica. Infamously named the "Bandit 6", the targets were six illegal poaching vessels known to Interpol and CCAMLR, who had previously managed to evade any law enforcement. Over two campaigns that spanned from 2014 to 2016, Sea Shepherd set the world record for the longest high-seas pursuit of a poaching vessel, removed 72 kilometres of illegal gillnets from the ocean, and successfully shut down all of the Bandit 6 vessels. "Out of the Bandit 6, one sits at the bottom of the ocean of Sao Tome and Principe, another of the Bandit 6 has been sunk by the Indonesian Navy, and the other four vessels are being detained in Cabo Verde, Senegal, and Malaysia. That means that the six vessels that Sea Shepherd sought to shut down with Operation Icefish, all six of those vessels have been brought to justice, and Sea Shepherd has shut down illegal fishing in Antarctica." - Capt. Peter Hammarstedt "Close to half of the world's oceans are the high seas, these are areas which are outside of national jurisdiction and make them the biggest ecosystem on this planet. Until the UN and other nations of the world can agree that there needs to be firm enforcement regimes on the high seas, Sea Shepherd will continue to send its ships and enforce international conservation law on the world's oceans." - Capt.
