I finished the Gerudo Training Grounds in OOT for the first time today! That last chest hidden up in the rafters of the treasure room was a doozy. I’m rather proud of myself for figuring out that puzzle on my own.
Still, I wonder who designed the trial? Did Ganondorf have to prove himself by solving it? Or did he design the thing himself? (”u gotta solve my puzzles in order to join my SUPER SECRET CLUB!!!”)
The most interesting thing about the trial is that it seems to reward perceptiveness in addition to just marksmanship and strength. There’s also the fact that a number of puzzles rely on illusionary walls, which is interesting given that it’s mentioned that “seeing the truth” without the Eye of Truth requires extensive training of the mind’s eye. Did the Gerudo have a tradition of training themselves to have supernatural vision? (There’s also the fact that the invisible wall in the treasure room can be spotted with a sound cue instead of by sight, given that you can hear the torches in the secret room crackling around where the room’s entrance would be.)
Another thing that’s got me excited is the fact that, in the 3DS remake, the Iron Knuckle room seems to have what seems to be either sarcophagi or armor propped up behind caged enclosures in the walls. I would say they’re armor, given that none of the figures appear to have legs, but their helmets seem to be modeled after pharaoh’s crowns, and their faces are covered with red veils, suggesting that these might be reliquaries or even bodies. (There are some interesting parallels between the face coverings on these figures and the statues with covered faces in the Yiga Hideout, which was a converted Gerudo temple.)
More fuel for the headcanon fire that the Spirit Temple was consecrated because it was the final resting place for the Gerudo Kings!
One detail I had forgotten was that the left wing of the Spirit Temple seems to explicitly only be accessible to children. Did the Gerudo Princes have to go in there unaccompanied to perform some sort of ritual for the Sand Goddess, or to pass a trial proving their worth? Rather interesting, considering that the goal of the trial was to protect the Silver Gauntlets, and that the Gauntlets were intended to be given to Nabooru rather than Link in the first place. Was the Prince supposed to go there to ceremonially ask the Sand Goddess for power by getting the gauntlets, then presenting them to whoever was the Gerudo Chief at that time?
Also, was that portion of the temple always covered in death traps, or was that Ganondorf’s testing place of sorts for the traps he’d later use in his castle? There’s something oddly fascinating about the idea of a younger Ganon spending his days among the sarcophagi of his predecessors, practicing his fondness for puzzles in increasingly morbid ways. There’s also something fascinating about the idea that the Gerudo Prince was metaphorically surrounded by death and this idea of remembrance and respect for the dead from his early years, particularly reminders of his own mortality.
Nabooru having the title “Exalted,” along with the fact that she seems to be the leader of the thieves, seems to suggest that she was meant to be the chief of the tribe, much like Riju and Urbosa were, but was relegated to “second-in-command” when Ganon took over. It seems to suggest that the Gerudo King having such a...direct hand in things was rather atypical for the Gerudo.
