In the Great Bear rainforest on the Pacific coast, the forests brim with marine nutrients, absorbed from spawning salmon who die in its watershed. Land and sea intertwine, one nursing upon the other. One day though (as early as 2050, some estimate), our oceans will have more plastics swimming in it than fish. And the fish themselves will be full of plastic litter. Researchers estimate that a quarter of fish sold at markets today already contains microplastics, even more in our mussels & clams. When I walk the trails by our home, lined with fall colors, I wonder to myself: Is there a day when salmon trees will become plastic trees? Will we be plastic humans too? One of my New Year's resolutions for 2017 has been to reduce landfill waste. At the time, I think I mainly had disposable coffee cups and uneaten leftovers on the brain. Those were the two personal vices that most visibly needed changing. As I continue on this journey though, I've been learning some other habits to lower my carbon footprint and protect the natural spaces that I love. This Zero Waste Week, I'll be sharing some of what I've learned so far and also what I am working on. DRYER SHEETS (change made) - When I buy things now, I try to think about how much time that item will actually be used before it gets thrown away. For dryer sheets, that's 1x use, maybe 50 minutes. And it's primary function is to deposit toxic chemicals onto your clothing and sheets that give you allergies and maybe even cancer. Yuck. Solution: wool dryer balls! Good for 1000 loads, then becomes a new toy for kitty. Add essential oils for scent. LAUNDRY DETERGENT (working on) - Our household is going through our last jug of Tide right now. Once we are done, I think we'll switch to bulk detergent refills at our local natural grocer. One less plastic container and fewer chemicals.
