In the Great Bear rainforest on the Pacific coast, the forests brim with marine nutrients, absorbed from spawning salmon who die in its watershed. Land and sea intertwine, one nursing upon the other. One day though (as early as 2050, some estimate), our oceans will have more plastics swimming in it than fish. And the fish themselves will be full of plastic litter. Researchers estimate that a quarter of fish sold at markets today already contains microplastics, even more in our mussels & clams. When I walk the trails by our home, lined with fall colors, I wonder to myself: Is there a day when salmon trees will become plastic trees? Will we be plastic humans too?
