Today plastic has become one of the most essential yet most , part of our life. Plastics are not only polluting our environment but harming lives of every living being present on this planet in one or the other way. Charles Moore, Plastic Ocean The story of our plastic addiction, at its core, is about our throwaway lifestyle. More than a third of all plastic is disposable packaging. Plastic bags. Bottles. Clamshells. Stuff that gets tossed after a single use, but persists for centuries in our environment. This past Fall, we went on a roadtrip through the Four Corners region, then headed north thru Utah. At the turnoff to @canyonlandsnps, we made a stop on the side of the road to catch a view of Church Rock. The sandstone formation glows reddish gold against the backdrop of the La Sal Mountains, and your mind pauses in wonder. The thing I remember most vividly about Church Rock though was the disheartening amount of debris, mostly plastic bags & soda cups, strewn among the desert brush. Miles from any town, plastic junk dominates a place meant to remind us of a house of worship. Anna Lappé says that "every time you spend money, you're casting a vote for the kind of world you want." In the Great Bear rainforest on the Pacific coast, the forests brim with marine nutrients, absorbed from spawning salmon who die in its watershed. Land and sea intertwine, one nursing upon the other. One day though (as early as 2050, some estimate), our oceans will have more plastics swimming in it than fish. And the fish themselves will be full of plastic litter. Researchers estimate that a quarter of fish sold at markets today already contains microplastics, even more in our mussels & clams. When I walk the trails by our home, lined with fall colors, I wonder to myself: Is there a day when salmon trees will become plastic trees? Will we be plastic humans too?
