The walk down to the Great Hall was quiet and peaceful. The majority of the school wasnât fully up yet. It was one of the reasons Ryou like being up and out of the dormitory early. It wasnât something he made a daily routine out ofâŚbut it was nice to beat the rush through the Grand Staircases at least a few times a week.
It also meant that he got first pick of a spot along the Gryffindor Table, before all the choice pastries were gone. Breakfast had only just started, and not even all of the staff were up at the High Table yet.
He passed by the usual early morning crowd: a small huddle of Slytherin first years scribbling out their homework assignments with a spread of textbooks between them, the same two Hufflepuff girls that always eyed him through a bookshelf gap in the Library when they thought he wasnât looking â (he wasnât, but the Spirit never stopped watching) â and one or two Ravenclaws from his Divination study group.

Ryou peered across the table. Hermione was buried in Setoâs copy of The Daily Prophet. Rather than read, she stared blankly at the page. The eggs and toast on her plate looked almost untouched, and she seemed unnaturally pale. Was she sick?
âHey,â he said, and tapped at the edge of the page. âYouâve been quiet.â
Hermione jumped. âOh!â
âWhatâs with you?â said Ron.
âNothing,â Hermione said quickly. She reached for her bag and got up from the table. âIâm not very hungry. IâllâŚsee you in Herbology.â
Yugi frowned and watched her brush past a pair of Hufflepuffs on her way out the door. âShe seemed okay when she sat down.â He paused. ââŚDid we say something to upset her?â
Getting closer to the end....one more strong writing day might get the rest out! But in the meantime...have a random assortment of paragraphs!
âAnd you think this is right?â Umbridge shot back, âthe boy instigated a fight with an Auror and rather than punish him, you just want to take his side and allow him to leave?â
âHe was supposed to leave,â said Professor McGonagall, âas part of his agreements with Professor Dumbledore. We, as wizards, upended his life to try and mitigate a threat from You-Know-Who. His sporadic weeks of leave was a compromise for his safety. And not only did the Ministry fail to keep him safe, the amount of effort on their part to rectify their errors and do better has been appalling."
2.
A light buzzing noise echoed through the otherwise silent room. Setoâs eye twitched before he pulled his phone from the inner pocket of his coat. With a quick glare at both professors, he opened the door and stepped out into the hall to answer it.
Umbridge took a step forward, likely to try and stop him, but Professor McGonagall gave her a stern look. âDonât, Dolores. Heâll be back.â
She took a sheet of parchment from her desk and started writing a note to herself. âI want Travers removed from the school.â
âWhat!?â Umbridge spluttered.

Abridged fic summary: In his efforts to find an edge over Albus Dumbledore, Lord Voldemort seeks out a magic only known to Wizards in myth and lost to time. Now, as targets of a madman halfway across the globe, the bearers of the Millennium Items find themselves thrown into a foreign war as an ancient relic brings an unexpected third player to the field.
Chapter 57 Summary: The urge to commit high crimes becomes all too high. Higher than, perhaps, the altitude where such a crime would take place.

Seto staggered back even farther as a large clawed foot landed scant inches from where he stood. His favored dragon emerged from its prison, crouched low in the strict confines of the corridor but still in its prior fighting stance, jaw wide open and ready to expel a blast of lightning.
Wrote another 2000 words of OLSSM today. Almost over the struggle hump, with plenty more still to go.
CH57 is gonna be long.
In the meantime, have a snippet!
Professor Sprout took a sip of her pumpkin juice and glanced towards the main doors exiting the Great Hall. A small herd of students had gathered near it, almost blocking the way in. âI wonder how enforceable it is. It is one thing to grant access from the common rooms to the library after hours, but we donât want anyone wandering the corridors atâŚ.â
She pursed her lips. ââŚWhat is going on out there?â
âHm?â Umbridge said, and followed her gaze. The crowd at the other end of the hall grew a little larger from those who gave up trying to fight the herd to get out. âIs thatâŚshouting I hear?â
Professor Sprout squinted out, to hear over the Great Hallâs normal noise level. âIâŚmaybe?â
Umbridge huffed and shot to her feet, with Professor McGonagall only seconds behind her. âWell! I thought it was engrained in their heads by now that fighting in the corridors was not allowed.â
She stormed up the row between the Gryffindor and Hufflepuff tables. âMove! Stand aside, let me through!â
The narrow space between the house tables didnât leave much room for people to step out of her way, and she passed both Weasley children nearer to the middle of the pack. Potter and the rest of their troublesome friends were nowhere to be found. Strange, but that at least meant that this had to be some sort of mundane problem. Easy to stop, and then she could go on with her day.
Probably just two third-years having a spat.
Quite possibly so, after she saw the flash of red light from out in the Entrance Hall.
When she finally pushed her way through the line of Slytherin girls at the front of the crowd, it became instantly clear that it was not two third-years having a fight.
She wished it were.
It was, of course, none other than Seto Kaiba, wand out and in a standoff with Travers.
âWhat in Merlinâs nameâŚâ she heard Professor McGonagall hiss from behind her, and then she brushed past and out into the hall.
âSTAND DOWN!â Professor McGonagall roared, and stepped between them. âMr. Kaiba, what do you think youâre doing!?â
