You may be wondering why these caterpillars are playing hoop with poop. There’s a theory that’s quite simple: They’re cleaning up.

Frass is a big indicator of nearby caterpillars, not just for birds and bug hunters, but for wasps. The caterpillars may also be simply cleaning up, as a large accumulation of frass takes up room in the nest.

The gardener who spotted this caterpillar for me stated that the poor grub had been attacked by wasps, pointing to the large white protrusions on the caterpillar’s back. Luckily however, these are just tufts of hair. Many tussock moth caterpillars have them, including this little fella.

I didn’t take many good photos of Olene dryina last I found it.

Even now, the weather is messing up my camera’s lighting. BUT as I’ve started before, this species is common. When the sun comes back, it won’t be hard to find another.
