my unpopular haikyuu opinion is that oikawa is a pretty ïżŒcrier
heâs so unfairly gorgeous every other time that iwaizumi, hanamaki, and matsukawa assume his crying face HAS to be ugly, or else it just isnât fair
they would never make him cry on purpose, so they only assume, but when they actually see oikawa cry after something kind of childish - losing a childhood stuffed animal (iwaizumi secretly comforted him because heâs madly in love with that man)
and their assumptions are proven wrong; oikawa is absolutely beautiful when he cries. his nose gets all pink, eyes shiny like crystals, and his lips get all pink and plump from biting them to keep from quivering
thatâs also the day three of the seijoh four learned about their dacryphilia kink
Mattsun scrunches his nose up in a way that Tooru does not find adorable â except for all ways he finds it disgustingly adorable â and gives Tooru an almost betrayed look as he sets down Tooruâs coffee cup.
âSince when do you like blueberry cappuccino?â Â Mattsun licks at his lips and scowls, clearly trying to get rid of the flavor. Â âSince when do you like blueberry anything?â
âItâs not like I hated it or anything.â
âYou did when you were sixteen.â
Tooru scoffs and takes a sip of his cappuccino. Â âI hated a lot when I was sixteen. Â People, places, things. Â Thankfully it was temporary and I got over most of it.â
âYou never hated me,â Mattsun teases. Â Tooru sets down his cup with a soft sigh. Â He can feel Mattsunâs gaze and he forces himself to meet it. Â âOr did you?â
âNot something Iâm super proud of but, for at least a little while, yeah I did hate you.â
Mattsunâs gaze flickers around his face. Â âYouâre serious,â he finally says.
Tooru nods.
Sixteen had not been a good year for him.  Then again seventeen had been a bit of a crushing blow and eighteen had been a nightmare of hard work and an aching body that sometimes felt three times as old as it was.  But sixteen⊠sixteen sucked.  Thereâs no nicer way to say it.  He told Mattsun that he hated a lot when he was sixteen and he did.  But it would have been more accurate to tell Mattsun that he hated everything when he was sixteen; his family, his friends, his body, school, volleyball you name it he hated it that year.
He finishes his cappuccino and is rinsing his cup out in the sink when Mattsun finally speaks again.
âI didnât realize,â Mattsun says quietly. Â âI mean I noticed some things that you were suddenly very opinionated about but I didnât realize thatââ Â He stops talking suddenly and Tooru glances over his shoulder. Â Mattsun is still looking at him but his eyes are a little glazed like maybe heâs looking at Tooru but seeing sixteen year old Tooru instead. Â âOh,â he breathes out.
âYeah.â
Hajime may have been his best friend since they were kids but that just meant that he sometimes had blinders on when it came to Tooru. Â Oh sure he could put his foot down and even now heâs one of the few people who can chastise Tooru with nothing more than a stern look. Â But Hajime didnât always notice the smaller things which, at sixteen, was one of the reasons Tooru hated him for a little while.
Coincidentally noticing those smaller things was the reason that Tooru had hated Mattsun for that same little while.
âI did realize,â Mattsun says softly.
âYou did.â
âI just didnât realize you were serious about it.â
âI donât think anyone did,â Tooru says airily as he dries off his cup and puts it away. Â âAnd Iâm pretty sure you and my sister were the only ones who even noticed enough to call me out on any of it anyway.â
âIs that supposed to be reassuring? Â You were a giant miserable mess but oh it was okay because nobody else took it seriously either. Â Is that supposed to make me feel better?â
âWhy are you getting so upset?â Â Tooru leans against the counter and crosses his arms across his chest defensively at Mattsunâs tone.
âWhy am I? Â Tooru. Â You.â Â Mattsun runs his hands down his face and lets out a disbelieving laugh that twists something in Tooruâs chest so sharply heâs a little afraid something just broke in there.
He watches Mattsun shake his head and look up like heâs asking some higher power for guidance and wonders if Mattsun is still in love with him even after all these years. Â Itâs been a constant in his life for nearly two decades now. Â No matter what else is going on in his life heâs always known three things for sure: Iwa-chan is his best friend, his motherâs favorite fruit is peaches, and Mattsun is in love with him.
âWhy are you here, Tooru?â Â He startles at the question. Â At Mattsunâs tone. Â At the way Mattsun is studying him.
âWhat do you mean? Â I retired. Â I came home.â
âNot here in general.â Â Mattsun waves behind himself, gesturing to the apartment as he says, âHere as in: in case you missed it this is my apartment, not yours.â
That something in his chest twists again and this time heâs surprised Mattsun doesnât seem to hear the sound of it snapping in two.
âHome has never really been a place for me, Mattsun. Â Itâs always been a handful of people.â Â
Tooru spins the ring on his pointer finger idly, staring down at the dark band as he wills his anxiety to cooperate, to not drag him under. Â He takes a deep breath, refusing to meet Mattsunâs eyes and he lets out an airy laugh and heads out of the kitchen. Â He grabs the few things he had left laying around Mattsunâs apartment and shoves them into his duffel bag. Â He had gotten used to not really unpacking things since he left after high school. Â He was never entirely sure when heâd be leaving, was always looking out the windows at the sky and twitching with a need to go. Â To move.
To run.
He can feel Mattsunâs gaze on him the entire time and it makes him calm and restless in equal measure, something that Mattsun has always been good at.
Heâs sitting in front of the door attempting to untie his shoes, duffel bag on the floor next to him, when he feels more than hears Mattsun come to a stop behind him.
âLeaving already?â
Tooru snorts, yanking at the knot in his shoelace. Â âWell you made it abundantly clear that Iâm not welcome here.â Â He curses softly as his shoelace just gets more knotted and tangled. Â âSo Iâm going.â
Mattsun plucks the shoe from his hands and after a minute he holds it in front of Tooruâs face, lace knot-free, and wiggles it when Tooru doesnât take it right away. Â Tooru huffs at him and grabs the shoe. Â But he doesnât put it on right away. Â Because the thing is. Â He doesnât want to leave. Â He doesnât want to go back to his empty apartment across the city where heâs barely unpacked despite being back for almost a month now. Â He doesnât want to go and stare at his blank walls and pretend he isnât ignoring calls from his mother and avoiding Hajime and, for once in his life, hoping nobody recognizes him when he steps outside in the morning.
âI never said that and you know it. Â You know what I mean, Tooru. Â You always have.â Â
He does. Â He knows what Mattsun means. Â Just like he knows Mattsun loves him. Â Just like he knows that clouds go in the sky and ice melts when itâs hot. Â He knows. Â That doesnât mean he has any idea what to do with that knowledge.
âWhat do you want from me?â Â He hates how defeated he sounds. Â How unsure of everything he sounds. Â
He is unsure. Â Of almost everything. Â But that doesnât mean heâs okay with people seeing it.
âThat depends.â Â
He wants to turn around and look at Mattsun. Â Or lean backwards and peer up at him. Â Or maybe curl into a ball and disappear from the world for a little bit. Â He wants a lot of things. Â But he already got one of the biggest things heâs ever wanted in life when he went to Argentina for volleyball. Â How can he even think about asking for more?
âWhat does it depend on?â
âAre you going to go halfway across the world again? Â Leave everything behind and chase after a dream?â
Pure anger chokes him for a moment, memories of all the people who had told him his dreams were silly or pointless or out of reach suddenly threatening to overwhelm him. Â Memories of everyone who had told him heâd never make it. Â That heâd never be good enough. Â Teachers and coaches and teammates and doctors and fellow students. Â
âI didnât just chase my dream. Â I caught it. Â I held it in my hands,â he bites out. Â âSo donât judge me because you stayed here and putzed yourself into a job at a funeral home.â
Mattsunâs fingers dig into his scalp for a second before running through his hair. Â âAgain. Â I never said that.â
Tooru lets out a shaky breath as his anger vanishes. Â Itâs always amazed him how easily Mattsun can do that; a simple brush of fingers or bumped shoulder and Tooru settles into his own skin again. Â He anchors Tooru, grounds him in a way no one else has ever managed.
âI donât plan on leaving again,â Tooru whispers.
âGood. Â Not that I didnât want you to chase your dreams. Â I did. Â I do. Â Even if you decided tomorrow to go off again Iâd support you.â
Thoughts of leaving flicker through his mind. Â Images of places heâs been and places he could go. Â Memories of being offered coaching spots and public speaking opportunities. Â A couple years ago, a couple months ago, hell a couple weeks ago they sounded tempting. Â Now they just sound exhausting.
Heâs exhausted.
âSo. Â What do you want from me, Mattsun?â
âI want you to stay.â Â Mattsun settles onto the floor behind him. Â Heâs a warm weight against Tooruâs back as he wraps his armâs around Tooruâs waist and tugs him back enough to hook his chin over Tooruâs shoulder. Â âYou went and you caught your dreams and now youâre back. Â I want the chance to catch my dreams. Â I want you to stay. Â Here.â
Tooru leans back against Mattsunâs chest.
âHere as in your apartment?â
âHere as in this city. Â Here as in my life in general, if thatâs all I can get. Â But if I had it my way? Â Here in my apartment.â Â He squeezes Tooru and sighs. Â âIn my arms.â
If there was an Olympic event for most emotional whiplash moments in the span of five minutes heâd definitely be medaling. Â Maybe not gold. Â But definitely at least a bronze medal. Â Because any trace of anger is long gone and his heart feels about seven sizes too big to properly fit in his chest right now. Â With Mattsun pressed against his back, breath warm against his cheek, Tooru feels balanced for the first time in a very long time. Â
Mattsun has always been waiting for him. Â Not in a stagnant way or anything. Â Mattsun has lived his own life, has had his fair share of ups and downs and experiences. Â But heâs always had a place for Tooru at his side, in his life. Â Just waiting for the day Tooru came back.
He can stay planted on the ground and stare up at the night sky without worrying what would happen if he floated off into that fathomless ether. Â Because he could shoot off into space, rocket around among the stars a bit, and never feel the slightest bit lost. Â He knows that Mattsun will never tie him down, will never drag him under the surface, anchored to the point of drowning. Â But heâll always be there.
Mattsun is his map, his compass, his North Star.
âDo you still love me, Issei?â  Tooru swallows down all his worries and licks the fear from his lips.  His dreams of pro volleyball are his past and Mattsun is his future.  A future that heâs pretty sure will be bright enough to outshine even the sun  one day.  âAre you still in love with me?â
âYes.â
He closes his eyes and relaxes back into Mattsunâs arms, body boneless and soul drifting free. Â
âI missed you,â he admits softly. Â âEven when I was on top of the world and had my dreams right there in front of me. Â I missed you.â
He canât say that heâs in love with Mattsun. Â Not yet. Â But he knows Mattsun understands and heâll get there eventually.

Parents were done by @seijohstardust and the kids were done by _tetsupon on Instagram! Special thanks to @sweetseijoh for helping me develop these kids and all the ideas the go along with this AU.
Matsukawa Issei was by far the biggest idiot he has ever crossed in his life. Not even Kageyama got the kind of resentment that Oikawa wished to inflict on his teammate.Â
âDamn Matsukawa, receiving homemade chocolate from one of the girls on the female volleyball team,â Hanamaki continued with his praise. âI didnât know you had it in you.â The rest of the team gathered around Matsukawa and the bag of treats that was gifted to him. Each chocolate in the bad was carefully crafted into different shapes of hearts, stars and squares. It was a beautiful collection of sweets, even the wrapper looked professional and that pissed Oikawa off.Â
âIâm surprised,â Kindachi folded his arms, ânot that Matsukawa-senpai got chocolate but I thought the girl's team would give all their chocolate to our captain.âÂ
âIâm not accepting any chocolate this year,â Oikawa immediately snapped. The room went quiet when the team noticed Oikawaâs sour mood.
âWhatâs got you in such a pissy mood?âÂ
âHeâs probably just mad because he never received any chocolate this year,â Hanamaki snickered and patted Matsukawa on the back, âlooks like we have the new face of the volleyball team.â
âI said I rejected them all!â Oikawa turned a hateful glare unto Matsukawa. Some of his teammates hesitated when they felt the effect of it.
âWhy you reject them?â Matsukawa stood steady against Oikawaâs non-verbal attack.
âUmm, I,â Oikawa staggered his words with Matsukawaâs unexpected question.
âLooks like someone's popularity has taken a hit,â Hanamaki continued to tease him.
âIt doesnât matter,â Oikawa grabbed his bag out of the locker and slammed the door shut. In the midst of getting ready to bolt to the door, Oikawa lost the gripping on his bag. He tried to catch the handle and correct his mistake only to miss and watch the bag fall while his contents rolled out on the ground. He mumbled inaudible words under his breath and dropped to his knees to throw his stuff back in his bag.
âI thought you said you didnât accept any chocolate this year,â Iwaizumi waved a tiny box of square chocolate for everyone to see.
âThey look handmade,â Hanamaki observed the package, âkind of cute but not as cute as Matsukawaâsâ
Oikawa felt his last straw snap. He reached up and violently snatched the box away from Iwaizumi before grabbing his bag and rushing out the club room.Â
Forget them! Forget that girl! Forget Matsukawa, that horrible idiot! Forget him!
Oikawaâs pace slowed down until he was standing alone on the path unsure of what to do with himself. He glanced down at the package in his hand. Some of the corners of the box were now bruised and messy. He guesses it didnât matter. It was simple and boring compared to the one Matsukawa got even in its best condition.Â
A drop of water fell onto the package. Oikawa slowly became aware of the growing wetness on his face. He continued to curse under his breath as he wiped away the tears. Repeating the words idiot and stupid - not sure if it was directed towards Matsukawa or himself. âWell, this was all a waste.â Oikawa lamented over the chocolate. He made a mess of the kitchen and bothered his sister for recipes all for nothing.Â
âI think you have something that belongs to me,â Oikawa felt a chin resting on the top of his head.
âMattsun!â Oikawa spun around and forced some distance between them. Matsukawa yawned and stared at Oikawa with half-lidded eyes. He suddenly felt conscious with his teary eyes still fresh. He tucked his head down to keep his face out of the sight of Matsukawaâs observing eyes. âWhat do you want?â Oikawa spat.Â
âChocolate,â Matsukawa pointed to the package in hand. âYou made it for me, didnât you?â
Oikawa cheeks turned a bright red and hid the package behind his back, âDonât you already have enough chocolate. If youâre greedy youâll get diabetes.â
Matsukawa sighed and scratched his head, âThe girl from before didnât give me time to say anything. She pretty much shoved it at me and ran away.â Oikawa didnât say anything but his shoulder relaxed. âWhen I see her tomorrow Iâll make sure to reject her properly and tell her I already have someone.âÂ
âWhat about the chocolate?â Oikawa felt his eyes swelling unable to stop the water from overflowing onto to his cheeks.
Matsukawa tipped Oikawaâs head up and gazed onto Oikawaâs puffy, tear-stained face, âI gave them to Hanamaki,â he said wiping away the hot tears pouring on Oikawaâs face. âGosh, you cry so easily.â
âShut up,â Oikawa sniffled. He didnât make a move to stop Matsukawa. âWhoâs fault do you think this is?â
âNot sure, canât be mine since I tell you every day I love you,â Matsukawa shrugged his shoulders. Oikawa was sure Matsukawa could feel the rising temperature of his skin. âIf anyone should be crying it's me for you keeping me waiting so long.â Matsukawa dropped his arms back down to his side with the last of Oikawaâs tear dried up.
âIâm sorry,â Oikawa whispered.
âNo need to apologize. Itâs pretty obvious youâve fallen for me so Iâm satisfied for now,â Matsukawa smirked.
It was so easy for Matsukawa to get on Oikawaâs nerves. They were having a moment but here Matsukawa comes ruining it with that challenging smirk, begging Oikawa to comment. âHere,â Oikawa shoved the box of chocolates to Matsukawa to avoid dealing with the statement. Matsukawa looked down at the box and then back up at Oikawa. âWhat?â Oikawa asked.
âFeed me,â Matsukawa stated.
âWhat?â
âFeed me,â he repeated, âyou always showing so much âtsunâ, I want to see more of your âdereâ side.â
âIâll just throw them away,â Oikawa began walking away and was drawn back by Matsukawa.
âCome on, just feed me one,â Matsukawa wrapped his arms around Oikawaâs waist from behind.
âI refuse,â Oikawa tried to pull out of Matsukawaâs hold. They bickered back and forth until Oikawa finally gave in to Matsukawaâs demands. He ripped open the box and picked up one of the balls of chocolates for Matsukawa. Slowly Matsukawa took the chocolate into his mouth and chewed. Oikawa waited and watched Matsukawaâs single expression as he ate the chocolate.
âSalted Caramel?â Matsukawa asked and Oikawa nodded.
âDo you like it?â
âOf course I like it,â Matsukawa answered like it was the most obvious thing in the world. âItâs my favourite and you made it. Hope it wasnât too much trouble.â
âIt was simple,â Oikawa lied. He didnât want to run Matsukawa over the details of overcooking the caramel into a sugar brick or the damage that was done to the kitchen until he got it right. All to make Matsukawaâs favourite chocolate.
âThatâs good,â Matsukawa pulled Oikawa closer and placed a kiss on his cheek. âThanks for the chocolate.â He took the box from Oikawa and stuffed it in his bag for later.
âY-your welcome!â Oikawa stuttered out. People were going to start thinking his face was naturally red if he kept allowing himself to get this flustered.Â
âAre you ready to admit you love me yet?â
âShut up.â
âWeâre getting there,â Matsukawa grabbed Oikawaâs hand and interlaced their fingers. Oikawa didnât argue and allowed this man, who terrorises him every day to pull him along. He doesnât comment on the soft shiver down his spine when he feels the small squeeze on his hand and ignores the annoying smile growing across Matsukawaâs face when he squeezes back.
