・In the film, the area of the Ichiyanagi household where the incident takes place is referenced as the “hanare-ya". Old traditional Japanese houses often had a “hanare-ya”, a room usually around the size of a small cottage that was removed from the main building, or “omo-ya”. It’s a little difficult to translate succinctly as Western architecture at the time didn’t often feature these kinds of detached rooms, so I just went with “detached room”. ・The Japanese koto is played with “koto-zume” or “tsume”, special plectrums that are attached to the thumb, index and middle fingers of the right hand (or left, if left-handed). The word “tsume” by itself can also mean “nails”. ・The “49th day” mentioned toward the end of the film references a part of Japanese culture where they observe the 49th day after a person’s passing with a Buddhist ceremony.
