i need to preface my cursed opinion with some background information: taxonomically speaking, sonic the hedgehog is not a mammal. like, he can't be. mobians cannot be mammals because being a mammal necessitates being a tetrapod. the presence of six-limbed mobians implies that mobians are their own clade entirely. this clade likely shares a common ancestor with the Sarcopterygiians (the lobe finned fishes that would go on to evolve into basically every four-limbed vertebrate on earth) and may even be considered sister taxa by in-universe taxonomists. however, this means that the ancestors of mobians diverged from Sarcopterygii about... 425 million years ago.
sonic the hedgehog is more closely related to a lamprey or a leech than he is to an actual tetrapod hedgehog or human being. it doesn't get more cursed than that. :)
