Najib says race column stays
KUALA LUMPUR, May 8:
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said today that there will be no changes to the government policy on the āraceā column in government official forms.
According to a report in the New Straits Times, the prime minister refuted an earlier statement by Minister in Prime Ministerās Department Datuk Joseph Entulu Belaun that the āraceā column which has no benefit would be dropped.
At a press conference after officiating Rumah Umno Taiping, Najib said Joseph admitted he did a mistake and would call for a press conference to rectify the matter today.
Najib then maintained that the āraceā column in official forms will stay.
āThe issue was discussed in Cabinet, but we decided to maintain the current norm,ā he was quoted.
At a press conference yesterday, Joseph said the cabinet decided to drop the āraceā column with no value-added or useful purpose in official government forms.
At the time, he said that the government studied the matter before arriving at the decision and the removal of the column would take place gradually over the years.
