Today is MOVING DAY! New planner day! Day 1 on the rest of the year! For planner fanatics, moving day is both exciting and daunting. These are the pages I've gotten done today in my BRAND NEW PLANNER! I have a few weeks to laze around and sort stuff out because school doesn't start until the 21st, so I'm taking my time.
I also unbound it and took out the last six months. The Mothers Who Know Planner from Leafy Treetops Planners barely fits in the spiral binding it comes with. Add some stickers and boom, too hefty to be comfortable. So, I use it 6 months at a time! Then I get moving day twice a year, the added sticker bulk isn't a problem, and I still get to use the same spiral binding that fits my planner covers. Win-win-win.
EFB and Gels
EFB = empty fruit bunches. That is exactly what it sounds like. They're abundant in Singapore, and make good substrate for some labs' projects. Picture, courtesy of Google search and the lucky first hit, etwau.com:
We got these in shredded form and spent some time grinding them down further; props to my colleague/co-intern for getting through them so efficiently.
And I got to watch how an agarose gel is made and used today. You make an agar solution, mix some toxic dye into it, give it a specific shape (combs/plastic squares with teeth create wells in the gel slab), let it set, then fill it with DNA fragments and some test controls, and run some electricity through it (Scranton! WHAT? THE ELECTRIC CITY). At some point, the DNA fragments separate by size and you can cut out what you need or assess your fragment quality. Do look forward to using this technique and have definitely stopped wondering why I kept finding comb-shaped gels in the sink at my last lab. :)
