[#50/50 of 2010s] Oddnesse, “Somewhere Somehow”

This has unquestionably been the decade of the algorithm in music listening, although it’s hardly changed my habits for the better. Most of any personal Spotify mix is just pleasant enough for me not to turn it off, but too similar to the stuff I already know to really stick. I guess there’s economic sense in that. 

I mostly use Apple Music these days. The Apple algorithms have more wild swings in my experience, which produces some fairly terrible suggestions, but also a fair amount of songs I actually do end up loving. This debut single from a fairly unknown California band turned up without much context on my New Releases playlist and I was immediately struck — it is exactly my kind of pop song. A hint of grittiness, some shoegazy layers, pulsating, and verses just as catchy as the chorus.

Algorithms, they’re good sometimes. (But mostly not.)
