Some early days experiments for Guardian, Protector!
1: A goofy, noodly tractor beam.
2: Moving the ground-level player via a second overhead character controlled by the same player.
There needs to be better transition/differentiation between those two viewpoints, but I’m excited to see that movement style working.
I’ve had a busy week getting caught up at home after finally getting back to Texas. Both Cloudbase Prime and house stuff. The tasks I’m working on for Cloudbase Prime don’t make for particularly exciting tumblr activity, but they are very exciting to me. It’s almost done!
Fortunately I’ve also gotten a bit of work done on Guardian, Protector. It’s just an art test, but I think it looks pretty good! I’m aiming to support mobile VR, and having a nice looking unlit art style will go a long way toward making that possible.
The little city dwellers now have gradient rainbow arms, which helps things a surprising amount. I’ve also got city backgrounds procedurally generating now. It was a great way to test the style out, but obviously building the actual level contents will be a lot more work!

My family visited northern California for a couple weeks. First it was for my work, then a family wedding, and finally I spent a week watching Oliver while my wife did a math work group in San Jose. It was a busy time, but I’ve managed to work on some stuff.
I went to Oculus Launch Pad 2017! It was excellent: amazing speakers provided insightful, experienced lessons about working on VR projects and I saw other game devs in person for the first time in years. It was a great group of impressively creative people (not just game devs!) and I’m excited to see what VR experiences they make.
Cloudbase Prime is in polish/get-feedback/repeat mode and is close to release. That’s a lot of work and worry, but it can also be a lot of waiting. Now’s a good time to work on new prototypes! My current idea is Guardian, Protector: a power fantasy for pacifists where you choose no sides and save everyone.
My normal start to new projects is to make an art test, but I ended up focusing on generating a bunch of these cute little critters instead. I want the game’s style to look good with piles of these varied little peeps wandering around, so it seemed like a reasonable distraction.
I certainly still have a lot of stuff to work on with how they look, but I’m pleased so far. And don’t worry, the pupils aren’t separate polys in the final model. That was a helpful mockup to test cuteness while in progress, though!
Great #WomenInVR turnout at the Oculus House breakfast at #Sundance2017. #VR #VirtualReality #Diversity #oculuslaunchpad (at Park City, Utah)
Zuckerberg speaking at yesterday's Oculus Connect keynote!!! ✨The past two days have been very inspiring in many ways. Met and reunited with many artists and storytellers who I admire and next generation VR-makers who are paving the way. In all of the many applications of virtual reality — from live action, games and entertainment to education, medicine, architecture and more — the greatest advances will be made when we continue to be vulnerable and genuine storytellers... welcoming others into a world and touching emotion and soul as this tech continues to become readily accessible to the world. Honored to be a part of Oculus Launchpad this year and learn from so many ✨ </ #OC3 #OculusLaunchpad> Now off to NYC for the Future of Storytelling Festival!! ✈️ (pc: @cybercodetwins ) (at San Jose Convention Center)
