LL is a curious thinker and thirsty for knowledge. The other day he asked how whales stayed warm. I was planning this activity for the future but here was the perfect opportunity. We pulled the ice cream maker own out of the fridge, filled with water and stuck in the freezer for a couple of hours. We didn't have shortening so I used bacon fat. I rubber banded a sandwich bag to LL's hand and stuck it a sandwich bag with bacon grease and rubber banded that on. I spread the grease so it covered his fist. First we tested the temperature which LL determined was "as cold as the artic." Then, we stuck the protected hand in the water. He was able to leave this hand in the water for several minutes without getting cold. His bare fingers lasted less than 30 seconds before he was cold. We also talked about cookie cutter sharks and how they eat the blubber of whales. #whales #experiment #blubber #artic #oceanlearning #homelearning #homeschoolactivities #stem #childled #marinebiology #ocean #oceanscience #unschooling #handsonlearning #preschool #science #preschoolscience https://www.instagram.com/p/By6OPU5gOxc/?igshid=1lh2q53xpro0y
