Bad Day
I will take my experiences from the day and use them as water to make a fall of humility.
Tomorrow I will shove a sock in my mouth and tie a rubber tube around my neck, tightly, so that I can stifle down the stupidity.
on absence // napowrimo day 17
absence is the gentle undressing of self; what goes first is not peace, but the ego. you are now primed to place the absentee above all else. the ocean beckons to you with its siren songs – you are well acquainted with the truth, but the slightest possibility of a reunion fuels your furnace now.
the ocean churns itself in playful delight, spitting seafoam at your feet as an offering of peace. you seize a breath and waddle into the ocean, the frigidness shocks your body. every perceptible sense tells you to turn around, but the rope tied around your neck is taut. whether it’s a noose or a life preserver is unknown. the saltiness burns your nose as you become almost eye level with the ocean. you do not hesitate. and take another step.
there are different types of ghosts.
a dead ghost, that stalk the earth because of something unresolved.
a living ghost, the part that anchored them to the earth died.
and a ghost in limbo; nestled neatly between the living and the dead.
you sing the siren songs, you light incense, offering food and drink, offering the warmth you’ve once shared. you offer nothing. you offer everything. the silence is all you can muster to say. the silence torments you and you heave every unsaid sentiment at it.
absence is the violent deterioration of self.
grief is eternal, everlasting, but almost enchanting. you find meaning in the mundane repetitiveness of everything. every symbol is a sign, every person in heaven-sent. the clock hits 3am, you’re wide awake staring at the ceiling from a dream where you felt their eyes watching you from another realm. you want to go back, you spend all night trying, but the next sleep is dreamless and weightless, the type where you wake up and don’t even remember closing your eyes.
but you’ll always remember that feeling, that they’re still there with you. maybe you laughed together, like you haven’t since they died. or maybe you just sat in silence. maybe you cried like you can’t in real life, bounded to the chains of the fact that your tears will always run out. or maybe, you had no dreams about them at all. but even then, you go to sleep wishing, hoping like a child. how wonderful is it that death can return a feeling we only felt as children?
and you find meaning in the mundane, and hope where bleakness lies, all surrounded by a constant sinking from reality. grief is being trapped between two worlds, it’s awake-dreaming, glimpses of what once was consuming you. it’s perpetual sleepwalking, and 333, and butterflies, and deer , and sunsets, and seeing their favorite number on license plates and their name on every bottle of coke you buy from the gas stations that never ID you. you wonder if they’re taunting you from the afterlife, maybe it’s love. maybe it’s love.
in my final moments, my mind will bring me brief comfort. chemicals will combine themselves to provide hallucinations that my childhood friend never moved away, but is next to me at a sleepover in 2012, the TV still radiating a pale blue glow, we’re going to church with her parents in the morning. beads clinking in my braids, i still smell the dewy grass of a saturday dawn. sounds of my heart flatlining shrink into the chirps of my favorite toy, flashing waves of familiar colors. gluey hands & worryless dreams fade into my dying being, crying and calling for my mother.
we die as the children we were born as, ever-returning to an endless womb.

The lights are off, the fan is on, 19 is hovering over a steak with fork and knife. His hair is curly and wet; unshaved and manic. The gristle glistens from his lips as he thinks over his gambling losses.
A Summer Painting
Bubblegum popsicle taste, lick lip drips in the summer heat, blues and pinks paint a sicky mouth that bites-in with exposed teeth and snarls at the cold.
The Day After Quarantine
Post-apocalypse or something as close to it as possible; these are the first words 19 wrote since May of one year ago. That was when he entered a slumber as deep as it can go, one of those tumid sedentary dormancies and he woke, yesterday, with a heavy hangover, feeling like a Wilco song played in a cluttered boxcar, wispy and hanging on to the key of D with a slow hand and a posture insecure. It was so difficult for him to adjust back to the waking life especially because the blinding-orange walls and rose haze cast down by the small venue iridescents made the moment feel peculiar. He picked a corner to stand away from the people mingling, mumbling around the small space with room for tables that aren't there and hanging over the big watering well. Sidewind whirlwind diatribe fills the air within the static reach of his hair - looking like he's about to kick some guys ass - the short gal by the counter offers a shiver of her cold brew coffee in a clear black cup in 19's direction - time to sip his own - they were all shaking off the rust and still a bit drowsy. Lots of big swings going on in conversations and songs - political shots and sweeping statements that can be seen tossed around online and now rehashed in person. All the bar others did not advertise their slumber as well, just a lot of long hair like beards to display their year of worry. Pop on the rhythm of the guitarists upstroke swing licking all five strings - as though something serious is going on - a great song he imagined was called All Animals Are People. He said it was beautiful, 19 didn't disagree intentionally, but as a man he had to show indifference and shrug. The truth was that the acoustic solo sounded good to all the nearby ears - squinty and bald the guitarist smiled and said "Thanks!" Tee-shirts, shorts and other smiling styles, some of the shirts say "Fuck COVID" another says Fuck The Future without saying "Fuck The Future." Watching as an observer while watering down the observatory - because its impossible to read - impossible to describe. Oddly things got hazier when he stepped outside. 19's clumped strands of long hair obscured his vision of the public street and the passage of its passengers. He wrote some more in front of a street busker, dancing in-between his pen strokes: I just want water to come from the tap of premier investment quality - it looks like a magical moment of night and day with sour patch kids in hand and head as he asked for my number. But I was barely belligerent. He muffled words of worry when I described my situation. We are happier when out about the fools that don't know their heads are spouts. We chase something when the sound is right - people and music make us feel alright, worry withers, and whip my whistle without the understanding of a word - press away, so good seeing a strange world blow by from the corner. A stranger approached and asked 19 how to dance like that and he said: close your eyes.
