#oc progression

I redesigned one of my OC’s again!

This one is Riley. I haven’t drawn him in a M I N U T E. This is my second redesign of him.

Idk if I ever fully explained him, so here you go! Riley was actually my first ever reacurring OC, and I came to making him after learning about the word ‘Androgynous’. I was rlly interested bc I lowkey wanted to be like that but my whole gender discovery would come a long while later (and kinda still hasn’t fully come but that’s a discussion for another day 👀).

Here’s the thing tho: I searched it up, and it made me mix up androgyny with intersexuality somehow 😭 And I was a dumb kid, but not dumb enough to ask my mega Christian family about androgyny and intersex ppl, so I thought they meant the same thing for years. So I ended up making him intersex. I actually wanna keep him like that, bc I never see them portrayed anywhere, but I’m scared I’ll mess it up or smth. Idk.

I’ll go on to the more concrete parts of his backstory. He actually had a pretty good life as a mixed kid up until about 7th grade (12 years old). An earthquake hit, and his home wasn’t built with the proper stability required to keep stable. His house collapsed, killing both of his parents and taking his eye along with them. He almost got placed into foster care, but his best friend I don’t have a name for yet got him adopted into his family, and he kept his old surname as a middle name.

His friend’s family was oddly controlling, and were very strange to Riley. They would treat him differently, and he found himself very othered and not really treated like a son. Because of this him and his friend never had much of a brotherly relationship, staying as friends who happened to live together. His friend was good at first, but during high school he started to snap under his parent’s pressure. He got violent and angry, getting into fights at home and throwing things and being generally a very abusive person. He never acted out outside of the house, and Riley never said anything, so things were kept under wraps and silently got worse.

In the second to last year of high school, one other person came into the equation, and I also doesn’t have a name for him 😃 Y’know what? Let’s call this new guy Green, and Riley’s adoptive brother Yellow. Green is a trans guy. The three of them remained as a bit of an isolated group with a lot of secrets, Yellow being the only one who really had friends outside of the group until senior year. At that point, Green’s parents found out about him being trans, and kicked him out of the house. He ends up staying in Yellows house, and that’s where they make a promise to each other to make a band together in College.

Things really unravel in College, and Yellow becomes very controlling and abusive even after college in their band, Moon Monsters (band name is a work in progress and may change) That’s basically the whole backstory. Can you tell I made most of this story as a depressed preteen? 😆 Ok, now lemme yap about his character design progression.

His first design was rlly bad 😭 it’s kinda embarrassing, but he was my first OC’s so that’s a given. I can’t bring myself to post my first ever digital drawing of him, but here’s a drawing with his original drawing of him:

He had no backstory and was mostly just made up of “Ooh this looks cool” ideas. This was as far back as I’m willing to go. I’m trying not to be ashamed of my old art but Riley is REALLY making this hard for me.

Funny story about the second drawing, I actually got art block after finishing it. It was sort of a wake up call that things weren’t going well with my art. I was pretty stagnant progression wise at the time.

I slowly removed some of the more excessive traits for a while. By the end of that little purge I had this:

I think that was my first time making a character sheet. I was pretty proud of it back then! The initials on his back were meant to be his parent’s and his first name, but I removed that. I went with this design for a while before doing my first official, major redesign:

I liked the design in general, but I felt like it wasn’t Riley anymore. I basically kept nothing but his skin color and freckles. Plus, I noticed that all of my black OC’s have afros, so I wanted a change for once. Before it was bc I didn’t know how to draw dreads or box braids or things like that, but I’ve gotten a lot better. So after not drawing Riley for a long time I did this current design. I kept the backstory and hair of my older designs, and the face and demeanour of my last redesign.

I think he looks super cool with his current goth aesthetic. I got the idea bc I started following some goth people, and THEY LOOK SO COOL OMG! It’s making me wanna try it out but I can’t 😔

From the "Serious one" to "Living Terminator." It's kinda funny to think how this guy started from that fucking Smosh song. He's still the "serious one" of the group, but he's learning to smile a bit more often.

The cafe was loud per usual, I’d would look up at the clock. One hour left and I’m out of here. “Hey Mistin.” I’d would hear Hal’s voice and turn around. No matter how silent their footsteps were. I always kept their guard up. “Yes Hal?” I’d would lean against the counter wanting to hear what Hal would like to say. “Could you clear up the tables before you go? Would help out a lot.” I’d would nod and head to the back and get the appropriate stuff to pick up the mugs and cups. However I’d decided due to it being only an hour left, why not listen to some music. I’d take something from my bag and. Take out a pair of earbuds along with my phone. Hal doesn’t mind listening to music if it’s near the end of my shift. I’d put on my playlist and head out to the lobby. I’d see my brother managing the cash register. I’d start clearing up tables while humming to my music. Somehow with the right music everything seems peaceful, it’s a feeling I like, but however never felt with anyone else… except… I’d then feel a tap on my shoulder and on impulse I’d grab their wrist. I’d look up to see a familiar pair of black eyes. Ray… ‘shit…’ Ray seemed a bit caught off guard by my actions. “Someone seems jumpy.” He chuckled a bit as I let go. “Strong grip to.” I’d take out my ear buds. “Sorry I wasn’t paying attention, that’s my bad. Ehe…” this is so awkward… but how come it looked like he wasn’t phased by my actions? I have been skeptical for awhile about what Ray does for a living… I started to suspect something ever since his second time coming in… scars on his body… manual labor doesn’t always include large cut marks and whole marks… “hm…” I’d suddenly hear Ray and turn to them again. He looked at if he was ‘trying’ to read my mind… if I’m correct which I hope not… he’s possibly a hero… “you doing ok Ray? You seem more… observant today…” he flinched a bit at my question. I’ve had a neck for observing people and they’re body movements, along with they’re body language. He seems a bit… confused at something… but at what?… “oh nothing, just admiring a cute barista.” I’d pause a bit holding a empty coffee mug in my hand. I was still clearing tables. If he’s gonna try and flatter me, I might as well do the same. I’d place the bus tub on a table and wipe my hands on my apron. “Well~ since you have an eye for admiring this cute barista. I guess I sound listen to a charming…” I’d brush a strand of his hair behind his ear. “Customer hm?~” I could see his face turn a light pink, he definitely wasn’t expecting me to return his flirtatious banter, but also I could spot a hint of confusion. As if he is confused he didn’t see it coming. “What’s the matter Ray? Cat caught you’re tongue?” I’d stick my tongue out for a bit as I see him chuckle a bit as he slowly recovers from the sudden comeback of flirting. I’d look up at the clock, my shift is nearly over. “Look I got to get back to work. I’ll talk with you another time. Cya around ok?” I’d go to pick up the bus tub but feel a grip on my hand. I’d felt my face heat up a bit. I’d look at the hand that was holding mine, then look up at the man holding it. He was so close to my face now. If you ask my it’s almost like those cheesy romance scenes you see in tv shows, but it gives you the fluttering feeling. “Ray?” We’d stay like this for a bit, my heart beating practically in my ears now. My face heating up more at the sudden close contact. This feeling was familiar… where did I feel like this before?… “HEY!” A familiar and protective voice barged in and separated my hand from Ray’s. “NO TOUCHING THE EMPLOYEES DURING THEIR WORK HOURS! Back off! I know self defense moves I’m not afraid to use em buddy!” I’d stand there dumbfounded as my younger brother stood between me and Ray, suddenly I’d hear Ray laugh. It sounded genuine…… why do I feel like a love struck teenager right now? I’m literally 30… “ah um no need to worry I was just getting bad to work. C’mon Creed let’s go.” My brother wouldn’t take his eyes off of Ray. “I’m WATCHIN you… Agh!” He’d hit the back of his head against the wall.

I would obviously check to make sure he’s ok, but he’d recover and glare at Ray. I’d chuckle at this as I look over at Ray. I’d see him smile, he then looked at me and waved me goodbyes before leaving through the door. I’d see him look back through the glass and our eyes meet. I’d genuinely smile for once. He’d smile back and turn away.

After work I’d make it home and stretch for the long day. I went grocery shopping, and got some healthy things for me. I’d put it away and lay flat on my bed. I’d think back to that moment his hand touched mine, his face close to mine… it all felt so… unreal… I’d feel that familiar feeling again……

Wait……

“No!” I’d feel my body shake as I remembered the feeling all to well and the first that came along with that feeling. Why now… I thought I finally got rid of those memories… but Ray isn’t like her… or him right? I’d start remembering such memories I wish to forget and never resurface I’m my mind. I’d head into the bathroom to wash my face quickly and continue to repeat… “It’s over, they’re gone… they won’t use you like that anymore…” I’d continue to wash my face with cold water and when I turned it off I could hardly tell weather I was crying or not anymore. I’d the. Lower myself down and take deep breaths before looking at my hands a flash of a memory, a flash of blood… a flash of sorrow… and betrayal… I’d hug myself as I continued to try a steady my breathing. It’s been years yet I still haven’t gotten over it…… but this won’t stop me from living my life the way I want it… I promised myself that… I’d be gain to calm down after awhile, and step out of the bathroom. I looked at the clock. It was 11pm nearly midnight… I decided to just take an apple I bought from the store and call that my dinner for tonight. I didn’t feel hungry… I guess… when you’re caught up in a good moment……

Some bad ones come back to you like a sneaky rat………
