Johan being raised to idolize knights and hero’s, only to be dropped into his own story bloody and covered in mud running from Sarevok
Then it becomes harder and harder to uphold these ideals of knighthood when the world is so cruel and violent, people constantly attacking him for the bounty on his head
He wants to be kind and virtuous and he is but for every good reaction there’s so much bloodshed
Then he goes home for the first time and sees the man who murdered Gorion father, and he can’t control himself. Anger, hidden rage and sorrow built up over months as he kills Rieltar. It’s even now he thinks, but everything still hurts so bad
Then he finds out that Sarevok planned for that, and it spoils any sense of justice or fairness he held.
When the titular fight finally happens there are no thoughts of justice or knighthood. Simply anger and a need to inflict violence upon the source of that pain
There’s no gallant sword fight between them, but a desperate struggle. The battle ending with neither of them having swords, johan covered in slashes and bruises barely able to beat him but angry enough that the pain that would of felled a lesser man isn’t phasing him
Johan clambering on top of Sarevok and beating him senselessly. No knight would bash a man’s head into the ground until he could barely recognize what was under him…
His companions watching him loose himself to violence and the laughable idea of Johan, the man who weeps at love stories and who’s too bashful to banter with Safna, is a son of Bhaal

Johan and Imoen are so close and near to me. An older brother fighting desperately to get back his little sister, he’s the older one, the stronger one he’s supposed to protect her.
Growing up he’d get talking to’s when they’d get in trouble. He was supposed to protect her and this is ingrained in her mind
Imoen on the other hand knows that she has things that Johan lacks, while she’s not as strong physically she’s more emotional stable.
Imoen got her own talks with Winthrop about how she’s the brains of their little companionship and needs to keep Johan in check and that think things through
