OBSESSION (2026) SPOILERS
I've heard a lot of comments talking about when Bear truly becomes irredeemable. The "what's so bad about being with me?" line, asking to alter the wish instead of cancel it outright, his "as a friend" wish attempt still invalidating Nikki's free will, the sex scene that was bluntly just rape, there's many options to choose from.
But honestly, I think he becomes irredeemable the second he snaps that Willow.
Sure, there's an argument to be had: "He didn't know it'd actually work", but like, what did he think was gonna happen? There's one of two outcomes: either it doesn't work and nothing happens or it works and he forces her into the relationship. Clearly you don't just do something like that knowing it won't work, so he must've been aiming for the latter, which ended up happening.
Also, when Ian makes his wish later in the film, he does it dismissively and bluntly, clearly thinking there's no way that it'd actually work. Meanwhile, Bear says it in this frantic, almost desperate tone. There's desperation there. He WANTED it to work.
Also, let's not ignore that he does this immediately after rejecting the chance to open up to Nikki. He has the choice to be open with her, to actually ask her out, but he doesn't. Why? Whilst it's partially his cowardice and fear of rejection, I think there's also a part of him that knows Nikki's never gonna like him back.
She's moving away, she sees him as a brother and he just avoided his chance to shoot his shot. To Bear, there's no way he asks out Nikki successfully, so he resorts to a bizzare, last-ditch attempt to force her consent, snapping the Willow.
And yet people still come to his defense...
Looking at you, Alex Meyers
So the thing that I think sticks out most to me about obsession (other than the phenomenal acting, sound design, filming and editing of course) is the fact that within the story you can see how it all couldâve been okay. Not the wish, the wish never couldâve been okay, but without the wish. Without Bearâs obsession. The movie makes it so you can see it so clearly. They give you this image in so many waysâthey give him these opportunities before and after the wish to choose the right thing, choose the hard thing. But he never does. For example he chose to buy her the one wish willow instead of the citrine necklace. In the movie theyâre vague about it but do you know what citrine is good for? Inspiring creativity, giving clarity and motivation. That is exactly what Nikki wants, what she says she wants in the car ride over to her house. Itâs what Bear would get her if he actually knew or cared for her instead of the idea of her, if he put more effort in than just the thought. But no, he buys the wish because I donât think he ever really intended to give it to her because have you ever seen something in a store and really wanted it but youâre there to buy something for a friend so you get it for them and just a small part of you wishes that it wonât end up with them? That it will stay with you instead? You justify it by thinking âwell Iâm the one who bought it anyway, itâs mine.â Because really it wasnât for them, it was for you. His giftâhis love, it wasnât for her, it was for him.
the fact that when nikki directly asks bear to end her life because thatâs how miserable she is, bear responds with, âwhatâs so wrong about being with me?â FUCK U.

More than anything in the world <3
I watched Obsession 2 weeks ago in theaters and ironically, I became obsessed with this film. Had to do some fanart for it due to how much it stuck with me.
bear lowkey just pussied out and left nikki to suffer with not only his death but sarah AND ian's. id tell bear to khs but he already did so idk
oh my god i just realized this because of seeing some of the script for obsession.
nikki never ate once she was wish nikki. aside from a bug apparently? when she vomits on bear, it's said in the script that she mostly is vomiting up stomach acid because she hasn't eaten in a while
like good god that is so unsettling. he doesn't even notice her not eating. he doesn't notice she's not writing. he doesn't notice anything and he just wants to continue the fantasy of being with the woman he's had a crush on for years. he just tells her to stop being weird as if it would undo the fact she cooked his dead cat.
he never truly had feelings for her because if he did he would have genuinely cared that she wasn't herself. instead of continuing to assault her even when he knows it isn't real
