Chronicles of the Overworld - Licia Troisi
This trilogy written by Licia Troisi is amongst one of the best fantasy series I’ve ever read (and I’ve read a lot). (I read it in Dutch, so I’m not sure if I have all the names correct in this review, I’m sorry if I get some things wrong.)
Nihal is an halfelf, the last one of her kind. She lives an easy, normal childhood, but everything changes when the Tyrant burns down her city. Nihal manages to escape, but only after she saw how the enemy murdered her father before her eyes.
Soon, things change, and the Tyrant becomes the ruler of more and more countries in the Overworld. The free countries can’t do anything but fight back and desperately hope they’ll win. Nihal has decided that she wants to fight for the freedom as well, and starts the training to become a Dragon Knight, the most prestigious fighters of the Overworld.
But as the Tyrant’s conquer over the free countries seems inevitable, Nihal finally meets her true destiny: only she can stop the Tyrant. Together with the mage Sennar, she tries to fulfill her destiny.
The way Licia Troisi writes is nothing short of amazing. She can keep the focus on the pure human side of the story without losing sight of the events. Nihal has to deal with a whole lot of feelings of vengeance, anger and fear, and these are amazingly described in the story.
There are two more trilogies about the overworld, the first one about the generation after Nihal and Sennar, and the second one about the generation after that one. Reviews of those will come soon ;) (as soon as I can get hold of a copy to read)
