Today's City Walk takes us over the Manhattan Bridge. The grand archway entrance to the Manhattan Bridge displays a style popular in the late 1890s thru early 1900s called the City Beautiful Movement. The plans for the arch were drawn after the bridge's completion in 1909. When: Saturday, May 31
Where: Philipsburg Manor and Old Dutch Church/Sleepy Hollow Cemetery Getting there by train: Meet Steve at Grand Central Terminal under the clocks at 10 a.m. Group will take the 10:40 Hudson Line train to the Philipse Manor stop.
Those going by mechanical mule can meet us at the station at 11:15. (Please note there is no parking for live mules, horses or elephants). We will then walk or car-pool to Philipsburg Manor, the possible inspiration for the Van Tassel farm in “Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” for the noon tour. Site consists of manor and water powered mill, as well as a working farm. There are picnic facilities on site. We recommend bringing food, but food is available for purchase a few blocks away. We will then cross the street to the Old Dutch Church and burial grounds (whose 17th century markers include one for a “Catriena Van Tessel”) and beyond that to the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, in which one can see burial art dating from the 19th century to today, and see the resting places of such famous people as Samuel Gompers and Andrew Carnegie (and Washington Irving!). There is also a rustic bridge if you want to stage your own photo running from the horseman. If time permits we might be able to get so far as the spot where Ichabod first meets the horseman, now a community park.
