Story time
let me tell you all a thing from a few week ago that I totally forgot about until just nowÂ
So skills day at the hospital, pretty chill, I was grouped with the 4 ladies over 50 which I was 100% okay with because we get along great, so it was me, the Momâs of my unit, one ER nurse 4 days away from maternity leave and 1 OR nurse 2 weeks away from maternity leave. It was pretty chill.Â
Skills day is from 8:30-3:30, and 3 of my nurses had to work at 3 so we let them do the âwe don't do this very often lets practiceâ portion first so they could go get ready for work and honestly idk where the 2 other nurses went, but it was fine. So my co-nurse and I were the only ones left.Â
So co-nurse and I, at the end of the day, are hanging with my educator and the ER educator, both of who I love more than life itself, and we were doing cultures and blood draws off an implanted port. Now at this point in the day my ADHD meds have kicked the fuck out, and everyone has to know it because I was in the âtouch everything but canât read anythingâ mood.Â
Also the only reason I knew it was blood draw and cultures was because thatâs what my educator said earlier in the day, not because I read the scenario. I got to go first because I think they all knew I had not much âbeing insideâ left in me.Â
So I'm standing there, and pick up the paper on the table, surrounded by culture and blood tubes, and look at this sheet of paper, absorb absolutely none of it, set it back down and sayÂ
âAlright lets do thisâ so whatever stumble my way through attaching the port attachment thing, and draw cultures and then draw the other labs, and unattach the attachment thing to the implanted port, and like I've made a total mess, which is pretty normal, and it was not a smooth ordeal but hey I got there in the end.Â
So I hand my educator the baggie of labs and she looks at me and laughs and saysÂ
âSo, I know you know to draw cultures first, but what made you draw the tubes that you did?â
And my honest to god answer, because honesty is the right thing to do, and I couldn't come up with a better explanation, was
âThose were the tubes that were sitting on the table and the first ones I saw, and I didn't do a waste tube because that would count for our cultures, why?â
And so my educator laughs and saysÂ
âWhat are we drawing for?â
âCultures?â
âOkay and?â
âThe rest of those tubes?â
And she laughs again and I'm getting nervous and she saidÂ
âYou have no idea what tests were running, do you?â
âNo, absolutely not. All my adhd meds have kicked out like 2 hours agoâ
And she smiles and this is why I love her, and she saidÂ
âI figured, you touched everything in the room and then read some random medication monograph I didn't even mean to have it on the table and the page was upside downâ
So I laughed and it was fine, and the ER educator saidÂ
âFor someone who didn't read anything on what you were doing, you did pretty alrightâ
SO that was fun. But yep, my educator just let me do my thing after pretending to read the scenario but knowing the whole ass time that it was a totally random sheet of paper I didn't even read đ
God I love her
