This work represents the moment in which the last defenders of the Hispanic city of Numancia killed themselves in order to prevent them from being captured alive by the Romans, who in this work appear entering the city while the Numantines commit suicide.

Alejo Vera y Estaca (Viñuelas, July 14, 1834 - Madrid, Fenruary 4, 1923) was a Spanish painter in the Romantic style who specialised in history painting.
