Again don’t worry it’s not black face, it’s to honour the original border dancers who covered their faces in soot so they wouldn’t be recognised and persecuted for begging
Me and dotty went to Stroud Wassail yesterday it was good fun, there were a bunch of Morris dancers we just ended up always being in the same place as the same group(Styx of Stroud). Other performers like the lovely ladies dancing (Merrie Morgana), then everyone congregated in front of the sub rooms to sing Wassailing songs and watch a short skit with the Stroud Broad of how people in the old days went about Wassailing, there were also a bunch of Mari Llwyds as well as sheep, goat and boar versions, but my phone kept saying storage full
For those concerned that the dancers are doing blackface it’s not, you can’t see but a lot of them had different colours and patterns, but also it’s to honour the original Border dancers who would blacken their faces with soot as a disguise to avoid prosecution for begging.
