For lunch the past several Wednesdays we've been going out to the Watts Towers, a series of structures made out of iron bar, concrete, and bits of broken glass and tile over the course of 33 years by an Italian immigrant and day laborer named Simon Rodilla (Rodilla called the work “Nuestro Pueblo,” or “Our Town” but Watts Towers has stuck for the broader community). Reading up on the history of this national and community monument I was struck by the similarity between my reactions to the towers and that of the broader LA community over time.
When the Watts Towers were first built they were ignored by most people, to the point where the property that housed them burned down. Over time however, people began to recognize their importance, and groups inspired by “Nuestro Pueblo” came together to turn the area into a national monument and revitalize the neighborhood through artistic house projects.
For my part, when we first visited the Watts Towers I was not very impressed. It was just more concrete, metal, and trash in a city of concrete, metal, and trash. But as we kept going back I kept noticing more things about it: the hearts in the arches, the lively bits of color, the beautiful community art it inspired. What better to celebrate a city of concrete, metal, and trash than a rearrangement of those same materials into art. What better way to re-imagine what Nuestro Pueblo could be with dedicated time and effort.
So as we cross over the halfway point for the summer I want to offer a big thank you to everyone who has helped re-imagine LA with us here at SSP, campers, counselors, and community members alike. And to those of you yet to join us, we look forward to putting in dedicated time and effort with you to make Nuestro Pueblo just a little bit better. See you soon!
