Mabo Day 3 June commemorates Eddie Koiki Mabo (29 June 1936–21 January 1992), a Torres Strait Islander whose campaign for Indigenous land rights led to a landmark decision of the High Court of Australia that, on 3 June 1992, overturned the legal fiction of terra nullius which had characterised Australian law with regards to land and title since the voyage of James Cook in 1770. Sadly he passed away 5 months prior to this landmark decision This day should signified and celebrated with a national public holiday by all Australians With respect I post this from northern rivers NSW acknowledging the original custodians of this land I stand on the Bundjalung people Thank you friends @nathan.mcguire @rhysripper for helping me to learn more about this and the broader topic - I am always trying, listening and learning #nrw2020 #aboriginal #australia #torresstraitislander #indigenous https://www.instagram.com/p/CA9hV7jhiIG/?igshid=1h0xymc0nz3e7
When I think of what I've been most proud to work on in my career to date, it's not the 'sexy' international stuff but social policy, particularly Indigenous policy. It's Closing the Gap and the Indigenous Voice to government. It's making a difference in the lives of a minority group and lifting them up. This is what I want to be remembered for.
As stated by the National Capital Authority, ‘Voice Treaty Truth’ - The Uluru Statement from the Heart is an invitation from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to “walk with us in a movement of the Australian people for a better future”. It inspires this artwork.

This week is Reconciliation week. Today I acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land which I am privileged to call home - Minnamurra, which in Dharawal means ‘Place of many fish’. I acknowledge the Wodi Wodi people of the Dharawal Nation and pay my respects to Elders past and present. I acknowledge the complex and troubled history of our country, the long dispossession and disadvantage of our first people and I celebrate stories of their survival. If you’d like to learn more, please check out @reconciliationaus to continue on our journey to come together as a nation made stronger in our knowledge and acceptance of our history. 🖤💛♥️ #InThisTogether #InThisTogether2020 #NRW2020 #Reconciliation #NationalReconciliationWeek #AlwaysWasAlwaysWillBe 📷: @joshuamikhaiel (at Minnamurra, New South Wales) https://www.instagram.com/p/CAyoDFrBtnk/?igshid=1eqose8h7xsbb
