The next novel study my team is doing (we teach sixth grade!) is Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. We split our kids up into the houses based on the full Pottermore quiz. We’re looking for some ideas on fun things we can do with these kiddos.
So far:
— create chocolate frog cards for the characters
— weekly house meetings
— quidditch? (Because we don’t ever get gym anyway 🙄🙄)

Hello my fellow nerds!! So it’s been a very long time since i’ve posted but life has been crazy.
Here’s an update on my life: I am going into my fifth and final year of University and will be finishing up my Education degree! I’m starting my internship in the fall and by some stroke of luck I was placed at my own high school with one of my favorite teachers!! I’ll be teaching English 10, Drama, Sewing, Art 10, and potentially History 20. I am so so excited but also very nervous
I know every school and culture is different, but has anyone had any strong success with teaching specific novels or recommendations for what books to have my urban, mostly white students read?

HELP ME CHOOSE A BOOK FOR MY NOVEL STUDY
I have a novel study due in 3 weeks. The choices:
Looking for alaska- John Green Notes- I’ve read this a bajillion times, and I love it, but I want to try something new, maybe as a plan B(?)
Who has seen the wind- W. O. Mitchell Notes- My Favourite book, Hella philisophical, but the pacing is wEIrd. Plan C maybe
To kill a Mockingbird- Harper Lee Notes- I Havent read this in forever, and I feel like it’s kinda clichéd. Still a good book though
Cat’s Cradle- Kurt Vonnegut Notes- its a really interesting book, but it’s kinda hard to explain, i want to re-read it soon, lots of food for thought
Books I Havent read:
Hearts in Atlantis- Stephen King Notes- this is Really Long. I Dont think I’ll have enough time to get through it. Summer read, for sure if i havent read it before then
The Picture of Dorian Gray- Oscar Wilde Notes- This looks really good. A Classic, seems Hella Poetic. It used to be controversial(?) concerned for the subject content (pg-13? Let me know if you know)
A Prayer for Owen Meany- John Irving Notes- the description for this is really interesting, but i tried to read The World According To Garp and quit halfway through.

I read the hunger games and its so bad I want to rewrite it myself
Okay so we're doing a novel study in class on the Hunger Games. I've never read it but it's obviously a very popular book, a lot of people like it, and the genre is right up my alley so I was excited. I'm on Chapter 20 currently. It's so bad. The concept is amazing, I'm in love with it honestly, it's displays how quickly propaganda and government control takes hold really well, I love the characters, and the world. But why does it seem like it was written by a 13 year old girl on wattpad? and not like a 13 year old girl with a deep talent for writing and enough trauma to fuel her creativity but a cringey ass cliche ass thirteen year old. this is harsh, I don't care. I've been predicting everything three pages ahead, and genuinely am not at all rooting for Peeta, he's gross, he has potential but the things he says make me wanna curl up in a ball and die. I know it's YA, it's mean to appeal to the younger crowd. I'm fourteen and I'm confident I could write this book 10 times better and more complex than it is. Genuinely my passion project might be re-writing the Hunger Games this summer, Cause what the fuck. I'm disappointed, and dissatisfied. Someone fucking please tell me they feel similarly.

For school right now I made the decision to do perks of being a wallflower for a novel study, and oh my god, I love the book so so so so much. I also watched the movie today and it is truely amazing. As a teen who is in a similar situation to Charlie, I relate to him so so much. Like “I am both happy and sad and I'm still trying to figure out how that could be.” OH MY FUCKING GOD. LITERALLY ME.
Chbosky is a literal genius for writing that book.
Anyways I am also learning about identity in school right now(like for home room and stuff) and as well as the annoying amount of transphobic people in my home room, I have also figured out that I don’t exactly have one. I have no idea who I am, and that is really stressing me out I guess.
