@notthegirlinthepicture - Thank you for this very important comment! Deaf issues are not always globally experienced. Many U.S. ASL programs actually have issues with running because of lack of interest, if you aren't in one of the major cities. However, it is very important to think about why we choose to take up this language: we need to always stay Deaf-centric. I remember meeting a Hearing couple in an ASL-1 first class sesssion that I voice interpreted for: they had just found out their baby was Deaf and wanted to give the little one the best start possible. Some people, by contrast, take it because it's cool. Both motives are fine, as long as we remember there are very real people on the other side of this linguistic experience! This makes me want to investigate this issue more, because it does seem intuitive that first-choice should go to Deaf. This was not an issue I had considered before this moment.
