Cheetham found out and charged Burr with trying to âhideâ the wrongdoings of the Federalists. Both the American Citizen and Aurora started a campaign against Burr. The pamphlet eventually gets published and Hamilton writes an angry letter to Coleman (editor of the Evening Post) about the inaccuracies and falsehoods.Â
More joint suppression of editorial falsehoods (A View of Aaron Burrâs Political Conduct): Cheetham alleged Burr tried to steal the election by sending his agents to different states. For once Burr defended himself in print and denied it. Cheetham claimed that Hamilton had personal knowledge of Burrâs negotiations with Federalists. Hamilton states this is untrue and he denies knowing of Burr negotiating for the presidency.Â
