Despite all the efforts Steve had gone to for her, prom was just as shitty as she predicted. The confident and cool ruled the floor. People were gathered in large groups of friends. Even the other burn outs were huddled together on the bleachers, stealing sips from someone’s flask. It was her genuine nightmare. Even with Steve at her side, it still felt wrong to be there.
Christy had escaped from the crowd, sitting on the curb outside of the gymnasium. She had slipped away when Steve wasn’t looking. He’d find her eventually, and he did. He didn’t berate her on leaving. He didn’t try to give her a pep talk to go back in. Not yet, at least. Instead, all he did, was offer her his jacket.
She shrugged her shoulders loosely, keeping her stare fixated on the concrete. “I don’t care.” Truthfully, she was a bit chilly. But she wasn’t in the best headspace.
