since i was asked ‘isn’t having both of your parents die at once terribly unlucky? Makes me wonder just when/how Gladstone’s luck kicks in.’

the comics are generally pretty vague about how gladstone’s luck works. don rosa invented the Sign of the Triple Distelfink as an explanation which was very. mechanical and doesn’t really explain anything imo. like... how does the ‘luck’ actually work? don rosa tries and it’s... clever i guess... he had the idea of gladstone gander’s luck working by making the most unlikely propability come true. which wouldn’t be ‘lucky’. you can’t really genuinely explain magical luck like that but it works well enough for the stories don rosa used it for.

however for me the other main explanation (there are a bunch of stories where it’s like. a magic coin he had once of luck DNA or something which also doesn’t explain actually anything) is far more interesting characterization wise and it’s how i always write gladstone’s luck:

if you think of Fortuna/Lady Luck as a person it offers interesting avenues for writing and characterization and explains some things very well. such as when gladstone’s luck works and when it does not

such as, why gladstone doesn’t seem to have luck with his love life

Lady Luck very rarely appears in person in the comics and even more rarely interacts with the characters so this is interpretation but... she seems possessive of gladstone, imo treating him like some mix of a pet/toy/child/(maybe romantic who knows)

she likes him, maybe thinks he’s cute and wants to spoil him...

but also is jealous and possessive and thus sabotages gladstone’s social life if it seems he might get close to someone else and doesn’t like it if gladstone tries to be independent. one of gladstone’s main values is pride in never working, his biggest shame is once earning money through work. he needs to put all of his trust in lady luck which keeps him from maturing

how much gladstone knows about how his luck works is unclear sometimes he is shown to be afraid of losing it if he does a wrong thing...

now to go back to his parents dying-

gladstone’s mother being as lucky as he was was don rosa’s invention, barks seemed to imply more the goose side of his family was more similar to gladstone... i tend to adopt don rosa’s ideas about daphne being lucky (even if i don’t care for lot of the ways he wrote gladdy’s luck) so i think daphne was just as lucky

so how did she die?

perhaps when little babby gladdy was born he caught lady luck’s eye and suddenly daphne no longer was her favourite
