What is non-binary dysphoria like for afab non-binary folks? I'm questioning my gender at the moment so, as long as it doesn't make you feel sad or uncomfortable, I would really appreciate some help in figuring out what I'm feeling.
Iām going to talk from my experience and it may turn long, but Iāll explain it the best way I can :)
It started when I realized how others complimented my appearance when I had moreĀ āfeminineā looks, ex. wearing dresses, skirts,Ā tight shorts,Ā make up, jewelry, sandals, etc. , but they didnāt when I wore hoodies, jeans and comfy clothes. In the beginning I thought I was overthinking it, but after a few months I realized I wasnāt. The silence was a subtle for disapproving my choice of clothes, and it came from my family, classmates and some friends.
At this point I knew I was non-binary and it made me feel very uncomfortable with my clothes, breasts, hips and face features. I tried to wear moreĀ āmasculineā clothes (wider t-shirts, plain colours, sports clothes and even stopped using make-up), but it didnāt work and I didnāt like it very much.
Up to this day, I still find my face too feminine and feel super uncomfortable wearingĀ āfemaleā clothes like skirts, dresses and tight shirts, but I havenāt stopped wearing them. Why? Because I like some of them! I wonāt stop being myself because I realized people wonāt stop misgendering me if I change the way I present; itās their minds that have to change. Have I wore a mini-skirt knowing the dysphoria I would feel as soon as someone looked at me? Yes! Have I not worn a dress so I wouldnāt feel misgendered? That too! Have I felt super uncomfortable tonight because I wore a shirt that showed my cleavage and men stared at me everywhere I went? Definately.Ā
I no longer regret wearing certain clothes because THE PROBLEM IS IN THEIR STARES, NOT IN OUR BODIES. I still cry and suffer because being non-binary means that only a few people gender us correctly. But I suffered more in the closet and I love being where I am.
You probably didnāt expect this answer, considering I havenāt talked about top surgery or hormones (and I want to get both), but I feel it is important to talk about this too. Surgery and Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) canāt bring us happiness on their own.
