just me or did any other enbies feel like stereotypically gendered activities had to be hidden when you were growing up?
Like you had to hide them to avoid being pigeonholed into uncomfortable binary gender stereotypes? Like I felt self conscious about liking Ben 10 and occasionally watching episodes of it here and there at friends houses and playing with the “boys toys” in elementary school. I also felt self conscious about my intense interest in the Disney fairies movies and strawberry shortcake. Like being afab I didn’t want to be seen as a girly girl or a tomboy. I just wanted to be lil ol me who liked a little of everything and was just a kid.
same goes for being given anything gendered that wasn’t immediately unisex. Like there where occasions where I had to be given the “boy” option because there wasn’t anything else. That felt weird because I didn’t have the words for it but it definitely made me feel like I was going to be pegged as weird for how tomboyish it was. However being given overly “girlish” things was too weird too because it felt not like me to be seen as a cis girly girl for my interests.
New gender-neutral term: *appears*
Past me, deep in the yolk: Is this nonbinary specific, or something anyone can use? Can cis people use this word for themselves? Can I call myself this even though I'm definitely cis? I need to know for cisgender reasons.
Egg emojis for before the egg cracks.
Lmk if you want an egg with another flag /g
Gender-Based Insults
Just musing on some feelings I had as an egg. I didn’t understand why calling someone less like their gender, or alternatively saying they were too much like the other binary gender, was such a bad insult. I was going to make this longer and include the idea that being male and looking feminine or female and looking masculine was somehow bad as well, but I wanted to get the comic finished and stick to the main point. The basis behind that kind of insult could be transphobia, but it’s probably also about gender roles and not adhering to social expectations (and for men it’s also femininity being seen as weak because sexism).
Notes:
I had cis people in mind when I used to think about this. For trans people it’s way easier to see why it’s insulting.
I’m not trying to say anyone else who feels this way is automatically agender or otherwise nonbinary. This was just something that helped me realise my gender identity.
