LEILANA VHS ART MADE WITH AN ACTUAL VHS

So I got a capture card and an HDMI-to-Composite converter recently and now have the ability to record my computer to a VCR.

I inked @thisbelongsto-nohbodys's art in Affinity Photo and added a goofy 80s background. I exported the layers and brought them into OBS where I projected them through a mini-displayport-to-hdmi cable and an HDMI-to-Composite converted into my VCR, where I recorded the art into a thrifed SONY T-120 VHS.

I then used OBS to re-capture the footage off the VCR with a capture card and made the GIF in screen-to-gif.

Here’s a WIP demonstrating how I intend the soundtrack and line reads are work off each other for the production of The Tavern Barz Story. 

Animation is usually animated before the soundtrack and sound design are added. I’m wanting to do the opposite... use the sound design and soundtrack to set the pacing for the rest of the film, in a process I’m dubbing audio-first animation.

The big benefit here is that I can get a good idea of the films pace before the animation is even finished, which means I don’t have to worry about deleting too many scenes or hyperfixating on details that might not even make it into the film. An added benefit to this workflow is that I don’t have to let the sound design, line reads, and music fight for attention... now there basically one and the same.

For this particular segment, I took some inspiration from the ongoing trend of “musical dubs” on Youtube, where the dialogue of a video or rap acapella is given some eccentric musical accompaniment... it’s basically Mickey Mousing but done based on existing audio. Some good examples I can think of include the work of Finn M-K and David Dockery. Adam Neely also has a few good videos on the subject (here and here), and it was through one of his videos I was introduced to the musical project JKXCM, whose work is just straight up awe-inspiring.

What he is: An amphibious like creature in his ability to live in water and land but not a true amphibian. Latin Name: Icthus icthanite - A human fish-like hybrid. More commonly known as Icthan or Icthans. Binary respiratory system. He has both lungs and gills, which are located on his side. When on land, since he has no nose, he has to breathe through his mouth, which opens to a very large size that takes up the majority of his face and is filled with very large teeth. This leads to a ghastly appearance when he walks on land, so many creatures tend to avoid him. He avoids them simply because he’s a shy creature. In the water, he only ever opens his mouth to eat fish, his main prey, or speak. He is a very good hunter due to the speed at which he can swim and his large mouth, which offers the ability to consume a large variety of prey. His legs are specifically designed to offer streamline maneuverability in water. On land, he maintains his grace, walking on the tips of his pointed legs with incredible balance. He stands at around 6'2 on land. He almost never eats on land due to the fact that it makes it too difficult to breathe. He is in fact sentient, and actually quite intelligent, as he is one of the few of his species strong enough to leave their aquatic home for long periods to study terrestrial life, which he does from a distance. His hands, which are used for grabbing prey, are clawed and very sharp, but do have quite a bit of dexterity. He does in fact speak English  though in an almost whisper like fashion through his teeth, making him quite hard to hear.

His Mouth: 

More or less an enigma to all things on land.

I try to make sense of it all, really do. I jump back and forth sometimes, scratching at my hair, sitting down keeping quiet, but it feels as though my heart my burst at times. As if the very action of sitting down revolts against everything thing I stand for. But what else can I do, especially if that’s all that’s asked of us, “Sit down, stay quiet, type this”.

It seems so bafflingly, how they ask us, pressure us to think, but not like this, not like them, not like that, not like her, not like him.

So when things move inside our minds. When the wheels start spinning. When beat start pumping in your skull, what can you do? Do you ignore it and say, “Well that wasn’t a part of the assignment”? Why should you? Why can’t we just let the chips fall where they may and go off every once in a while? What wrong with feeling the skin of another man’s broken nose against your knuckles? Eventually the world would settle like shaken soda pop. It’d flatten out, and taste smoother. I say burn it all, let those kids broke that TV, let that girl sit with her legs spread open, and let that old man let his jaw fall. Let the music blast so loud it breaks windows. Let’s just release this gasket in our souls and let the color fill up our veins and capillaries. Because, seriously, what are the value in these numbers we cradle over our heads? 5,000? Five Thousand? 5,000,000,000,000,000? Six billion? Eight? Two? 1? One?2.1?2.7?4.5?6?Three hundred? Quarters, halves, semi, sorta, kinda maybe, yes no but never why. Why?

And my brothers and sisters, I have finally come

So allow me to take this pressure, this expectation colored by your orbs [dulled by imperfection sameness, the mediocre] AND let me drink it up!

Like lava I shall let it warm my meager soul.

It will calm these frayed nerves

It will warm my toes, perspiring under the weight, this burden

              My brothers and sisters my message is this:

We are all in the same boat

And that boat is sinking
