Congratulations on winning the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, dear Emmanuelle Charpentier! Only last year, Federal President Steinmeier presented Germany’s Order of Merit to the scientist, who is conducting research in Germany (photo of the award ceremony). Today, in a letter, he congratulates her on the high-ranking award from Stockholm. The Frenchwoman, Scientific and Managing Director of the Max Planck Unit for the Science of Pathogens in Berlin, receives the award together with the U.S. American Jennifer Doudna for the development of a new method of genome editing. 

Gerade die aktuellen Ereignisse haben deutlich gemacht, wie wichtig die Erkenntnisse von Virologen sind. Der australische Virologe Peter C. Doherty hat in seinen nobelpreisgekrönten Forschungen herausgefunden, eine der unglücklichen Auswirkungen des Altwerdens sei, dass man mit den meisten Weinen nichts mehr anfangen kann, es sei denn, sie sind teuer. Er selbst kaufe nur noch Whiskey und Bier. Das wäre doch auch ein schöner Vorsatz für mein neues Lebensjahr. Whiskey und Bier, und das auf ärztlichen Rat, nach neuesten wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnissen! Denn von dem allerorten stattfindenden Virologenbashing halte ich, ehrlich gesagt, nicht viel.

He was empty within. There was no stimulus, no absorbing task into which he could throw himself. But his nervous activity, his inability to be quiet,.........had indeed taken the upper hand and become his master. It was something artificial, a pressure on the nerves, a depressant, in fact......This craving for activity had become a martyrdom, but it was dissipated in a host of trivialities.
