VF Task #20
Rising above with Noah North.Â
The Trial, The Album, and Love.Â
Picture this: You’re 25, successful, wanted in more ways than before, your privacy is non-existent at this point in your life, everything is on the line. Because one minute you can be at the top and the next you can experience what you fear the most: failure.
While the lead singer and guitarist of Broken Republic hasn’t experienced failure in the since of music he has felt the heat of the press. We finally sat down with Noah North to get the scoop on the trial, the latest album, and his love life.
We sit in a side room at Razor Records, next to the recording studio. His brother is busy away drums and vocals. North normally oversees the recording sessions of all members, just as Lucas does. The brothers are heavily involved in every aspect of their music. That might stem from Lucas’ father, James, who owns the record label.
Noah North has taken a break from helping, he sits across me looking like something out of a dark Disney film. His jeans tight, slightly ripped at the knees, worn in combat boots, and a tight grey t-shirt. His eyes are the brightest thing on him as he seems to lack color everywhere else. I wonder how tense this moment is for him, only to have been cleared of co-conspirator murder charges not two days ago.
I: Thank you for joining me today. I wanna get straight to what’s on everyone’s mind. The Trial.
Noah shifts in his chair. I myself get uncomfortable. I remember the last time I sat down for an interview with North. His behavior unpredictable, he left, a glass left broken and the chair tipped over. I had half an interview that I had to finish up with his brother, who wasn’t much better.
N: What about it exactly?
I could see his mood shift, you could cut the tension with a knife. I didn’t want this interview to go array before it had even started. Â
I: It must have been hard, your whole circle seems to be connected to Nova Knox in some way. But, you and Brielle Silva, knew that you were innocent all along. Your names were cleared. How did that moment feel?
N: I was angry, from the first moment that I was arrested to the time I had to go to court. That book of Nova’s has caused more trouble than it ever should. Half of it was fictional and Nova knew that her fans would understand that the book was about her, myself, and Brielle. She was egotistical in her own ways. Am I sorry she died? Of course. I’m not happy about that. But at the end of the day I was put on trial for something I didn’t commit. I don’t think anyone would want to be in that position. Things like this have happened before. Innocent people get thrown in prison for something they didn’t commit. There was no proof that Brielle or I was involved in her murder and that’s because we didn’t do it. I felt terrified. I didn’t know what was going to happen. You can know in your heart what is the truth that doesn’t mean anyone else will believe you.
I: And the feeling when it was all said it done?
N: Relief. But, it feels like it’s not over. It’s not over for Nash, it’s not over for my brother, it’s not over. Hearts will heal, but it takes time.
I: And they will. Your album, Grim Reaper, is being released next week. What are we expecting with this new album?
N: We have 15 new songs. Some of my favorites are Grim Reaper, Reckless Behavior, Vice, Mercy, and Limbo. We want to take people on a journey, through the artistic soul. Death, love, rebirth. It all goes together. I’m excited for our release party. To get out and tour.
I: When does your tour start?
N: In July. We’re going state wide first to California, Texas, Chicago, New York, and Florida. Then finishing off in Europe with Spain, France, Germany, and UK.
I: That’s exciting stuff!
North seemed to relax for the first time, slumping back into the chair with a smile.
N: It is. I’m proud of this band. Always have been. It’s nice knowing I’ll be preforming soon.
I: Now, we can’t mention Nova without mentioning the guy in your life. Nash Rose. The two of you are rumored to be dating. Is there some truth to that?
N: It’s not a rumor. It’s true. He’s my boyfriend.
I: There was a time that you weren’t open about your bisexuality. Is he the first guy that you’ve dated publicly?
N: Publicly yes.
I: Is that because of your mother?
Noah’s face turned stone cold, if there was a certain nerve to hit it was that one.
I: The church she is with is planning to boycott your release party. How does that make you feel?
N: We’re done here.
Those were the last words he calmly spoke.
The Rock God’s words turned to yelling. A painting taken off the wall and thrown to the floor. Producers stepping out of the recording studio and finally his half-brother Lucas, coming to his rescue.
What I have learned about Noah is that the more the subject is closer to home the more erratic his behavior gets. I’m lucky I interviewed Lucas first because I was thrown out of the studio after Noah’s tantrum.
