When a system harms you and you cannot exit, the only rational move left is to stop over-contributing to your own damage. That means using every legal, procedural, and bodily allowance to reduce load. Sick leave is not sabotage. It exists precisely because bodies fail under work. Using it is not lying; it is acknowledging reality. Minimal effort is not moral failure; it is matching output to survivable input. Protecting your body is not rebellion; it is refusing to donate health to an abstraction. The Church framed this as sin. Modern work culture frames it as laziness. Both are lying for the same reason.
Let’s be precise, because clarity matters. You are not trying to destroy the system. You are refusing to let it destroy you faster than necessary. This includes:
– Doing exactly what is required, not what is implied.
– Taking every rest, break, leave, and accommodation available.
– Detaching emotionally and identitarily from the work.
– Conserving energy for what keeps you alive, not what flatters the system.
This is not virtue. It is triage. And notice something important. Systems rely on voluntary overcompliance. They survive because people give more than is contractually, physically, or legally required often out of guilt, fear, or internalized morality. When that stops, the system does not collapse, but the individual stops collapsing. That is the real scandal (for the system).
